Looks like even the difficulty change isn't enough to make the AI competitive on a Archipelago setting. Any difficulties to report? How was the finish for your game?

Hmm... I was surprised the starting position was so generous. This turned out to be a rather uneventful culture game. Since the AI's had a hard time getting contacts with each other, I had plenty of opportunity to go after wonders. Getting a GA with Colossus certainly helped nab several of the ancient age wonders quickly.

China was the runaway AI this game, wiping out Ottomans early on. They beat me to Newton's and tore through the industrial age, the only civ to make it to modern times. From a post-game investigation, they were 14 turns from building the UN, while I was still researching industrialization. If my 20k wasn't due for a bit longer, I may have had to bring the world to war with them. But I had basically stopped paying attention by then, simply hitting End Turn repeatedly and waiting for the victory screen.

1250 BC built Colossus in Madrid, surprising me with a GA in despotism with 5 cities. It worked out though, helping with REx, the early war with Scandinavia, and tech.

900 BC GL v. Scand rushed G Lhouse

290 BC built H_ Gardens

700 AD GL v. Babylon rushed Sistine to prevent flip of spice city Pamplona @ north tip of Babylon's continent. Twice Babylon RoP abused and Declared, trying to take this city and was repulsed, though it was a close thing for a few turns.

930 AD built Kopernik's

1100 AD took lead in Tech

1200 AD (about) Persia Declares, and throws an insignificant force at Casa del Bamrapido , my city on his Continent that I managed to squeeze onto an Ivory before he could expand over it. I have Cavs and Muskets and he has Immortals and Pikes.

1230 AD built Magellan's

1280 AD GL v. Persia > Cav Army

1305 AD built MilAcad
1305 AD GL v. Persia rushed Smith's

1330 AD built H_ Epic

It was a small nuisance getting Iron in the beginning. I traded it from Carthage, then Korea, then Babylon, then took Persia's, (which was the same Iron Carthage had in antiquity.)

I was the first by far to the Modern Age, so I sold and then gifted techs to all my scientific brothers; 2 got Fission. This was the first time I ever used that technique (which I learned here of course). I then traded 500 gpt + Peace to Ottomans for Fission. My UN prebuild had 5 turns left, and I could have had the tech in 10 turns by myself, so I only saved 5 turns this time. I gifted everyone again, probably too much, but hey it's only money. And Tech. And Lux. China and Carthage were Gracious most of the game, Ottomans and Korea mostly polite, Vikes and Babys pretty Furious, but I turned 'em around eventually. Babylon and Korea were pretty close at second place, and I couldn't tell who I would be running against, maybe both.

By the end, I had 3 empty armies standing around, waiting for tanks, which I never built. I could have filled them in 2 or 3 turns if the need arose. I never even connected the Oil (perilously close to the Vike border), though I had a fortress, ample defenders and 4 workers sitting on it. I try not to connect my only oil source until I need it, having watched it disappear once in another game before I even had Combustion.

Thanks for another fun game!

predator, diplomatic
(actually I wanted to come back with a conquest but for some reason Spain always makes me want to play a scientific game)

ancient age

Settled in place. Start sequence is warrior -> warrior -> settler -> warrior -> warrior -> worker. City 2 is founded on the 4-turner, at RCP 5, then we complete granaries on both cities before settling further. Three cities are placed at RCP 5 before breaking the pattern.

Soon we met Scandinavia, trade some techs and explore the rest of the island.

Research is the canonical beeline to Map Making and Republic. We start with Pottery at max followed by Writing at min (this will give us enough money to substain a 100% research for the whole ancient age).

Map making is complete in 1300 BC. We have 2 galley ready for sail immediately and a 3rd one a few turns after. We met Persia and Carthage first, trade techs and maps. There are some some borders in the fog but the AS havent met each other yet, so we have to sail to the other side of the continent to meet the Ottomans and Chinese.

The first part of the game is essentially uneventful, with Spain focusing almost completely on expansion and development. We do not build wonders at all; on the other side, the Vikings are quite fond of wonders, with Nidaros completing the Colossus and, later, the Great Lighthouse.

The AS are slow, so we manage to snatch two cities oversea and secure both spices and gems.

The settler factory is also used to produce a nice amount of worker, and this is the reason why we hit the 1000BC mark with only 10 cities, but the land is well developed and productive. Meanwhile, one after another, all the AS are met, with the last one being Korea in 775 BC.

Republic is mastered and established in 630BC, then we proceed to research Currency. The tech is mastered in 510BC, and in the same turn Persia completes Construction. We trade and get into the Middle Ages with Republic still being a monopoly. The scientific AS are sold or gifted into the MA and we manage to collect all the first row of medieval techs.

middle ages

After having tossed out settlers for the whole ancients, Barcelona begins building the Forbidden Palace. The plan is to invade Scandinavia, seize the whole western part of the island and relocate the capital in Bjorgvin, on the west coast, in order to have a ring of 5 cities at RCP 5.5 around the new capital and 8 cities uncorrupted around Barcelona. We only need one leader to move the capital, and thanks to some barbarian trainers we have enough elite units to count on it.

The invasion starts in 30 BC. Things go smoothly at first: Nidaros is captured and we seize Colossus, Great Library and Great Wall. But then, a pair of serious SOURs (Strings Of Unlucky Rolls) slow down our advancement to the point that war weariness start hitting before the Vikings are completely cleared, so we are forced to offer peace and leave the job unfinished.

Hovever, the main goal (taking over the island) is accomplished and after several elite wins the leader is produced by a horseman defending successfully against an enemy archer :)D). Three viking cities are relocated to fit in the ring and then, as soon as the Forbidden Palace is complete, we move the capital as planned.

Research goes smoothly with a decent help from the AS. Thanks to a clever prebuild Madrid completes Copernicus in the late medievals, the ideal time to start the golden age.

The lack of iron and saltpeter was a serious concern through the whole medievals. Any AS wanted an outrageous price, to the point that we couldn't buy those commodities for gpt without facing a severe slowdown in research.

A few turns before entering into the Industrials we finally got a supply of iron, but then more complications came from a surprise attack by Babylon. They cut off the vital trade route for iron and took over a formerly Viking city. No big deal (we recaptured it shortly after) but we got into the Industrial still at war and with the dastardly babs refusing to talk, so we had to fish for IA techs with one scientific AS less :(

The industrial ages are reached in 520AD. The lottery gives Nationalism (2 times) and Medicine. Steam Power has to be researched.

industrial ages

At the dawn of the industrials we capture an important babylonian city that will allow us to control iron once rank 2. The babylonians are stronger but they are slow to move because of an unimproved jungle between us and their core, so we manage to capture a third city and sign peace before their dreaded stack of cavalry units reach us :D Then we proceed immediately to clear Scandinavia and free the remaining MP units on the east.

From now on it's downhill, nothing much except for research, railroads and improvements. The prebuilds for Evolution and UN are timed correctly. A second sneak attack (by Persia) does not change anything. We also manage to get again a good attitude by Babylon, thanks to a strip of generous donations. The modern age fishing goes well, with Fission discovered by two AS, so we can buy the tech for a cheap price. One turn after, the United Nations are complete. The opponent is China and we won the vote by 5 vs 2.

End result: diplomatic victory in 1100 AD, for 5738 Firaxis and 9283 Jasons.

And here's the final minimap

Since the capital was to be a building city, I wanted to see what was around before building. There was no way I would build on the cows, so I sent by worker sw to see what he could see. Looked good so thats where I built. Yes I loose the cattle for a couple of turns, but hill and tree might be better in the long run.

3050 BC Palace built 2 warriors to look around and protection.
3400 temple
1300 Pyramid

built one settler. Built my second city north to use the two cows as a settler builder and sent the first few back to the capital to help it grow up to 12.

1000 Colossus GA starts, not what I wanted but oh well.

In order to get iron I declared to steal it from Persia.
I declared war and had China and Carthage join in to keep them busy. Built 5 galleys and loaded them with spears, archers and a settlers. Once Persia was ready to talk peace I landed them by the coastal iron, crossed by fingers it would survive the attacks. Built my city with the two remaining but damaged units, and made peace with the Persians. That city lasted long enough to prepare an army to attack Babylon. I lost it to a cultural conversion 2 turns before I took out the Babalyon city that was protecting their iron.

Normally I prefer to play an expansion game so I had to hold myself back from wiping out the Persian,Chinese and Ottomans. Doing so allowed me to build up a few elite units for Leaders to build my wonders.

Overall, a fun game, but now I have to clean the planet of these AI scum !!!!
