The Pentagon's computer systems are attacked constantly throughout the day, everyday. This is clearly an act of war, but what should be the response? Should we declare war? Bomb China's computer/internet "Infrastructure"? Retaliate in kind against their networks? Cut off relations? Scale back/cut off economic ties? Nothing? Something else?

Hire free-lance hackers to break into the Chinese Website and type "Whos your daddy!"

The thing about cyber-attacks is that it's hard to know who's behind it. The Titan Rain one was often blamed on China but there's no real evidence, same with the Estonian Attack that was blamed on Russia. (so, what did I say about it being like espionage?).

Get a bloody firewall like everybody else.

Alright, think of it like this. Even if I have an alarm system and locked doors in my home, it is STILL illegal for someone to try to break in and they can be punished.

What punishment should we give China for their attempts? Personally, I think we should destroy as much of their internet infrastructure as possible with quick air strikes, but I know everyone will think that is an over-reaction.

No nukes? :(

Do you think its possible the US does similar things? Its own cyber-warfare? Or is that beyond imagination?

It's like espionage, in a way, imho. So you would respond to it like you would respond to spies I guess.
yup, it's the only sensible response, IMHO. Or do you think that the US does no such thing on foreign servers?

edit: I see RedRalph was faster :gripe:

but seriously, if people would react with military force, every time someone hacked your servers, the world would look a bit like the moon....and have around the same population

not to add that a air strike against 'internet infrastructure' would be largely a waste of resources and lives since the internet has been specifically designed be resilient against this kind of thing

I am not THAT anti-commie. :)

Of course we do. And I await China's air strike from across the Pacific via their insurmountable force projection capabilities with trembling fear.

so it comes down to the same old 'might makes right' thing?

Might does not make right, but it makes a lot of things moot. Besides, if they would embrace a free and democratic goverment, rather than one with an ultimate goal of world domination, maybe we wouldn't do it to them.

:dubious:

So we're back in 1985 with Reagan and the Evil Empire...

The most legendary and respected paper in the world, right out of the UK.

Larry M. Wortzel, the author of the US Army War College report, said: “The thing that should give us pause is that in many Chinese military manuals they identify the US as the country they are most likely to go to war with. They are moving very rapidly to master this new form of warfare.” The two PLA hackers produced a “virtual guidebook for electronic warfare and jamming” after studying dozens of US and Nato manuals on military tactics, according to the document.

The Pentagon logged more than 79,000 attempted intrusions in 2005. About 1,300 were successful, including the penetration of computers linked to the Army’s 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions and the 4th Infantry Division. In August and September of that year Chinese hackers penetrated US State Department computers in several parts of the world. Hundreds of computers had to be replaced or taken offline for months. Chinese hackers also disrupted the US Naval War College’s network in November, forcing the college to shut down its computer systems for several weeks. The Pentagon uses more than 5 million computers on 100,000 networks in 65 countries.

Nuke them by activating a device that will self destruct the world which effects can't be canceled. I see you are proposing realistic measures so this is some other good way to deal with such criminal situations as the ones you proposed.

Meanwhile, Chinas version of VRWCAgent is saying Besides, if they would embrace an ordered and socialistic goverment, rather than one with an ultimate goal of world domination, maybe we wouldn't do it to them

Question, what operating software does the pentagon has on their PC?

and i want to read the pages of the sites hacked by those chinese:

UR BEEN HACK3D BY XIU HU LANG.
OMGROFLBBQAMERICANINFIDEL
oops, back to the gold farming!

That's not some right-wing hack's blog?!?!? Who are you and what have you done with VRWCAgent??
 Truth be told, I saw it first on a right wing site but luckily IT was referencing the Times article. That said, recall that I love the BBC as well. If it is British, I tend to be pro-"it".
If it's even remotely possible to hack into systems that control supercarriers then someone need to be quite seriously fired.
You do have a point there.
