What type of governments does every one use? It seem you need to choose one and stick with it because those long anarchy times can be quite costly.

I tried a few game with Democracy and now im on a game as Communism. Still cant tell which is better. War is tuff with Democracy but in some ways it ie almost easier because of more money and rushing projects with $$. Using people to rush things does not sound like a good idea. What is money good for in Communism if you cant rush things with money? Also, what are the down sides of draft under communism?

So far I've only used democracy because I love the money rushing and the economy is better which increases amount you can spend on science.

*And if you use a (religious) civ your gov change is much quicker*

:king:

It might just be that I'm new at Civ3 and still do things the Civ2 way, but I think Democracy is the best. I just make sure that I get Universal Suffrage if I plan on going to war. I'm usually peaceful but sometimes I get the hankerin to use my advanced tech to wipe out some pathetic civ. I also make sure that I use a Religous civ so that if i don't get Universal Suffrage I can switch to Communism or Monarchy with Anarchy only lasting one turn. I like the Egyptians the best cuz they fit my industrialist style.

Democracy is number 1!

Nothing beats the loads of cash that roll in with a well developed democracy. You can still have fun with wars too, just approach them with a bit more planning. Figure your objective, build up the assault force that will take the objective within a few turns, then go for it.

The only thing that money is really useful for under Communism is for purchasing things from other AI's.

If you fight a long war, there's no way to keep democracy. I had U suffrage, police stations everywhere, but the unhapinness levels were uncontrolable.
Not that I couldn't smash all civs quickly, but I tend to let them live to make the game longer. And having deity civs under your feet, ah that's sweet :) .

I used to always strive for democracy because of the benefits its provides for commerce and science. Having begun to play on emperor, I have remained in Monarchy from the end of the ancient era until such a time that I decide this world is relatively peaceful. This does not happen often. I usually end up remaining in monarchy for most of the game. If I have pretty much put everyone down I will switch to democracy, but this also rarely happens. I prefer monarchy to communism because of the ability to rush build with cash rather than people. In a violent world you will not fall far behind in tech because everyone else is forced to switch from democracy as well, and, once you get your infrastructure developed, your economy can really take off. I usually have 100+ units, which are all paid for by my subjects, allowing at least a 10% increase in my science spending. It doesn't quite equal out with democracy, but it is not too much worse. My people are always really happy, and I max out my palace sometime in the late industrial period. Monarchy rocs!:king:

what is the deal with drafting? I know under Democracy there will be hell to pay but what about for Communism or Monarchy?

I wonder if the the creators of the game made Democracy the best form of government because it's an American country? I mean there are huge benefits and the only real downside is war-waeriness...

A WarKiwi from australia?? hmmn

anyway this is an american game, so obviously they have made democracy government by far the best, i even fight my wars in democracy, and get suffrage or finish it really fast. I wonder why monarchy is so much worse than democracy, i thought the british pound was worth more than the american dollar, hmmmn again.

Or maybe they count America as a republic and england as Monarchy, and so they feel the greatest government is a New Zealand government, Democracy, wahoooo:D

I usually make a bee-line for republic and then switch. I'll stay with it for the rest of the game. Less war weariness and better than communisim or monarchy for gold-science. I like to go to war though (Usually pick the germans) so democracy is hard.

This joke is actually very close to the truth. Here in America we don't really have a democracy. At least not in the actual definition of the world. The best literal description of our form of government is actually a representive republic. In civ3 we would be a republic.

England isn't a monarchy any more than America is a democracy. Governmental power in England is held by the houses, not the Queen. The best civ3 category for them is also a republic.

New Zealand is very close to an actual democratic state.

well .... i dont have a "favorite" government .... i change according to my situation .... and i think if u have a "favorite" government then u are likely to miss out on opportunities ... i just change for whatever is going to be needed

but .... usually ..... i stay in desposism for a while .... warmonger a bit (despot is soooooo great for war) .... i find monarcy to be a useless government (or at least much less usefull than any other) ...... i usually stay in desopotism till im in a good position to change to republic ie good chance of a lasting peice and i already got the land i want ....... then tech up till communism/democracy ........ during this time sus out the world to see if there will be lotsa fights for the rest of the game .... or if u are going to be able to goto and change to democracy and live long and prosperious ... and remember .... those warmongers have a MUCH shorted tech tree .... they dont need sooo many of those tecks around democracy

yea .... i NEVER change government for the sake of ..... it is ALWAYS a clear and concise change of stratigy with clear objectives to be acheived by the government

and the conscript thing .... democracys hate it and u dont need police units .... so the defenders i use in democracy are my hardcore vets ... but in communist government i like to have a full compliment of conscripts for every city and use there police ability to full extent .... and i dont have probs with the draft under communism

paying for improvement and units with citizerns is great! especially with your border citys .... in 2 turns u have a temple that cost u 1 citizen and all your units in ancient times take 2 turns and 1 citizen so your army can almost roll on and the city can build its own defence

and money under communism loses lots of importance BUT ... it doesnt lose any signifigance to anyone elses coffers ..... is great to get at least someone in the world to be at war with the democracys ..... a democracy CANNOT fight a long war ... well he might but will drop science money and all the good things a democracy has got to offer ... tough democracys are still tough democracys!!!

I thought that was odd about the set up of government as well. Republic's are more 'advanced' forms of government than Democracies. The ancient greeks had a democracy; we have a Republic, as well as most modern industrial nations.

I'm always a Democracy... I've been at war for over 100 turns as a democracy. I've had very little difficulty with rioting, basically because I'm rarely on the defensive, the war is being fought on another continent, and I have a lot of resources going towards happiness (40% I think).

I also think war weariness is fairly silly. Besides Vietnam, when has war weariness been an issue in a democracy? In Civ 3, you're being invaded and they're people saying give peace a chance. Damn hippies

Historically, democracies have fared much, much better in warfare than autocratic governments.
