Hammurabi and The Code of Laws

We play as The King, Hammurabi of Babylon, creator of the Code of Laws, who will bring about the rule of righteousness in the land and enlighten it, to further the well-being of mankind. Heady stuff :D Actually, gozpel and i hashed this out at the end of last month, with me looking for a 100k game and him putting the CoL spin on it.

I was going to quote a couple of the laws here but there’s 282 of them and it’s hard to find one or two translated from the ancient text that appeal directly to a game in 2004. Oh well :) Here’s one that’s more fitting of Monty Python than anything:

Law 2: If any one bring an accusation against a man, and the accused go to the river and leap into the river, if he sink in the river his accuser shall take possession of his house. But if the river prove that the accused is not guilty, and he escape unhurt, then he who had brought the accusation shall be put to death, while he who leaped into the river shall take possession of the house that had belonged to his accuser.

here are the rest of the Code of Laws

    Civilization: Babylon
    Version: C3C 1.22f
    Difficulty: Deity
Map: Standard Pangaea, 60% water, the rest random – 1st generated map
    Barbs: Off
    AI Aggression: Normal
    Scientific Leaders are off.
    Opponents: Random, cultural links off
All victory conditions are on except wonder.
    Re-spawn is off.

    Variant Rules:
    1. 100k victory is our goal
    2. Max Research Path for Code of Laws (adjustments allowed for lux tax, must be max sci allowable without causing us to go broke). After CoL, research rate may change to less than max but we prefer Lit.
    3. Once we get CoL, we must declare war on our nearest opponent and trigger our Golden Age as soon as possible (yep, deliberately despotic GA :) )
    4. No pop rushing, ever. We value our people, and this is for whom the Code was written for in the first place.
    5. Accept all culture flips. We’d like as many as possible.

General Rule: We value our reputation and no blatant abuse of the AI or game mechanics (RoP Rape, fake deals, warped units via city giveaways, etc.)

The despotic GA will hurt us, can we overcome that?

25 turns to start, 2nd player 15, 10 from there on out. 24hrs got it/72hrs play it.

ok, sounds good, microbe can do the honors :) you'll just generate it yourself, 1st draw, scout's honor.

but let's wait for another player or 2.

I know I shouldn't but an easy builder game with limits to war is my type of game. I'll take the last spot.

Questions about the "max research toward CoL then Literature" question:

    1. If min and max research get the tech at about the same time, do we still have to set to max?
    2. Can we buy CoL? Do we have to buy so it comes faster?

Max research is 100%, except when we need luxtax. We want it ASAP and as we go for Writing, then CoL I doubt the AI will beat us to it. After that we can do whatever we want with science, but we want Lit too because of those lovely libraries for our people to enjoy.

Remember, it's also very important to get temples as fast we can. The idea is to get culture buildings now, instead of later :) But of course you need the occasional defender.

Play 20-25 turns as you see fit.

great, looks like we're filled :) always glad to have tex and bugs along! updated 1st post with the current roster.

25 turns starts it. next player can do 15 if he chooses, 10 from there on out. however, this is not a hard and fast rule. if you need an extra turn or 2 to set something up for the next player or finish something off, by all means go for it!

1 thing to remember after CoL, we have to declare war on our nearest opponent and trigger our golden age, so we have that to get ready for as well. take 1 city, then declare peace.

Does that have to be IMMIEDIATELY after we get CoL? Or we have to shut off research after CoL and before we declare?

BTW this is our start (first run!):

after we get CoL, we immediately declare on our neighbor. i would imagine whether or not we shut off research is up to that player. actually, i'm not sure where you got the impression that we would have to turn off research. did i miswrite something in the top thread?

i think gozpel said it best:

    The rules said:

    2. Max Research Path for Code of Laws, the Lit.

So it seems we must go CoL->Lit path with max research? (or just CoL and Lit is just "recommended"?)

    3. Once we get CoL, we must declare war on our nearest opponent and trigger our Golden Age (yep, deliberately despotic GA)

Do we have to declare, or have to trigger GA also at the same turn of getting CoL? If for any reason we cannot trigger GA, do we continue to research Lit or pause the progress? That's what I mean.

4000BC: I move worker SE, it reveals another BG in the north. Settler moves to east.

3950BC: Babylon is founded, and we start max research on Alphabet.

3450BC: we meet India. He is up Alphabet, Pottery and Warrior Code.

3150BC: We meet Portugal. We are up CB and he is up Masonry, Alphabet, Pottery and WC.

We cannot get Masonry but I buy Alphabet+worker with CB+3gpt.

3000BC: We met Inca. We are up CB and it's up Masonry, Pottery and WC. Sadly we cannot trade. We cannot even sell for cheap gold as Inca has no money.

ok, i see the confusion, sorry.

re#2: max research on CoL, then we'd prefer lit., rate does not have to be max. after CoL.

re#3: we should declare when CoL comes in and we should do our best to make sure we have troops positioned to start our GA. we value our rep so we can't have troops in someone elses borders when we declare on them. Therefore, i would imagine that the GA is triggered a turn or 2 after CoL comes in, unless we get lucky and that civ has troops in our borders. we do not need to shut down research till our GA is triggered.

    i think that is clear?

Roster: 24hrs got it, 72hrs play it
    microbe <- started us off
