Can you load a Great General onto a caravel and then use the General as a Warlord? This would be an awesome naval unit. Swift and dangerous, but can it be done? Has anyone done this in the past?

Yes it is possible. I haven't done it personally but others have discussed it on the forums.

It's definitely possible, its usefulness is another question... While you're at it, might as well attach a Great General to a bomber...

with the new upgrades, it might not be bad. With a charismatic leader, you can get a level 6 by attaching a general to anything. I don't like sending generals into battle, and usually have a super-healer by the time I pop a general. I would use the General for 3 strength, and 2 drill. Once it upgrades to a destroyer, it's an unstoppable ship. Plus, if I use it to eliminate some of the AI's outdated units, I can give the destroyer another strength upgrade. That's strength 42 with 1 guaranteed first strike against the AIs usual 36 for a destroyer. Put it as the leader of a stack and I'm gtg. I dunno, it sounds fun

Yeah, don't let my cynicism throw you off. I don't really like attaching Great Generals to units as it is because I would almost always prefer the +2 experience points in a city. If you want to create the most powerful ship for fun, by all means, go for it. But I still want someone to attach a Great General to a bomber :)

Also, in case one didn't know, you can move any ship into a fort with a GG and attach it there...not just for transports!

You can do it in the city, just move the garrison out first, then move them back. You'll get a little unhappiness while the Longbow/Rifle/Infantry/Whatever is just outside, but by the time you put them back it goes away.

That being said, I've also stopped putting generals with units. I used to do it all the time, since upgrading the unit is free, the experience really helps, etc. But now... No, it's just not good enough, not compared to multiple Warlords being attached to a city. Look at it this way--
Attaching four Warlords, throughout the game, to units = 80xp.
Settling four Warlords, throughout the game, to cities = +8xp per unit.

The first case will be very helpful for a little while, then the unit will die... And you're done. Even at 95% success, you're going to get unlucky eventually. It happens. So having two or three Warlords active at a time can be amazingly good, but it simply doesn't happen. Or if it does happen, it doesn't last. Meanwhile, with the second case you can regularly create units at level 3 or 4. ALL your new units at that city will be level 3 or 4--with The Pentagon, West Point, and a Barracks, you can get, what, 16? 17? I forget if Barracks are 2 or 3xp. If the answer is 17, that's a level 4 unit.

Warlords attached to units need a buff. That's all I'm saying.

EDIT: Oh, almost forgot, if you're going to attach Warlords to units, then the ideal unit to do it to is a Maceman once you have Rifling. In BTS, you can still build Macemen when you have Rifles (Why? Don't ask me, I have no idea...) so build one, attach a Warlord and give it CRIII and whatever all else you want, then Upgrade for free to Rifleman.

Haven't done it with a caravel. I have more often than not with a privateer.
That is fun! Then I can use it during peacetime and keep racking up the exp.
When things get dangerous, I put into port and wait to become a destroyer.

Okay, Bonafide11, you talked me into it ! Next opportunity...

Might try a super privateer on my next game, if nobody else seems close to building large numbers of frigates. I've honestly never used a warlord unit to attack with. I just use my first GG to make a super healer chariot so that I don't have to worry about being able to build West Point when the time comes, and then settle the rest in my West Point city.

Using one GG to give healing and movement to an early melee unit makes them a great escort for cavalry raids. With the free upgrades, they stay relevant the entire game.

I gotta try the privateer gig. I completely forgot that I could move the garrison out of the city and upgrade any type of unit! Will try

.... and then watch as your vassal's fleet of frigates sinks each and every last one.

Well, the trick is to do the privateer pillaging/experience racking before your opponent has frigates.

This tempts one to beeline Privateers, and use the money from blockades to take over the world, whilist having a high science rate.. mwuhahhaha..

Yeah, I had a pretty massive fleet of privateers on my last OCC. There was a long period of time when I was between wonders and had more ground troops than I was ever going to use, and for some reason the AI wasn't going anywhere near Astronomy, much less Chemistry...I had every major port city bottled up by the time Frigates came around, and I'd popped two Great Generals from Caravels alone. Just a warning, the sound effect of all that money rolling in actually gets so loud that you have to turn your speakers down so that you can't hear anything else happening.
