I have an idea of " Great Divergence“

    it works like this:

If a civ , say Moor discovers America before anyone else, then the sate religion of Moor---Islam will receive a tech bonus----- any city in the world that has Islam will research 50% faster, and Islam will spread across the new world (which means USA will believe in Islam)
and of course , Islamic world will have a great edge. Other countries like England or Japan, which there are few cities with Islam, will have to build a national wonder called" mordernization" to catch up with Islamic world.

And this works both way, If Japan first discover America, civ with many buddhist cities like Corea or China, will receive a tech bonus of increasing research rate at 50% just like Japan, but civs with no buddhsim have to build the national wonder called "mordernization".
And USA will believe in buddhism.

If England discovered the new world, then civs like Norway and Germany will have a faster research rate because there are many cities believing in Protestantism, and the New world will also believe in Protestantism. But other civs have to :
welcome the spread of Protestantism and make every city believing in it

    or build the building mordernization.

the building "modernization" have two effects:
    1. increase the research rate by 50%
    2. unstability or even rebelious forces

The problem here is that a pursuable research bonus will always be attained by the player, unless the player isn't in the colonization race, in which case it'd always be a Catholic civilization. This means the entire mechanic would only benefit the player or the already most advanced tech group.

And 50% is way too good. Usa will meet a welcome SoD of tanks when spawning.
