So, I finally got home last night and played Civ5. I love it. I decided to skip the tutorials and just jumped into a game with the advisors on. I played on Warlord, Standard sized map, and continents.
Despite playing on continents I ended up on a large island with two city states and no other civs. I was happy to see that this didn't screw over my technology, since there's now no tech trading. Even with being isolated until I got navigation I was able to stay well ahead of the AI in tech (partly because I was playing Babylon, and partly due to playing on warlord).
I ended up befriending one of the two city states on my island (Vienna), and that one asked me to kill the other (Kuala Lumpur). So I got an early taste of how all that stuff works while not having to deal with any full civs yet. I then set about clearing my island of barbs and taking over Kuala Lumpur, which I puppeted. Vienna became my friend for life after that.
The rest of the evening flowed rather naturally as I proceeded down the tech tree to navigation and then sailed around the world to meet everyone. It's definitely as addicting as ever. I found myself doing the proverbial "One more turn" before finally forcing myself to go to bed so I could get up for work today.
I can't wait to play more tonight!
Edit: I did have one issue with saving games. But it's not major. I can save to Steam cloud, quicksave, and autosave just fine, but my regular save doesn't seem to be working. The button does nothing when I click it after typing in a saved game name.
