At the 1:15:00 mark, Carl mentions that "great people are unique to certain civs" which seems to imply that some civs cannot get any great people. How do you feel about this? I had no issue with civ specific great people but I hate the idea of only certain civs having access to great people from both an immersion and a gameplay standpoint.

As far as I can tell, the only civilizations that can earn great people are those that have one as their unique civilian unit -- thus far, that's Egypt (Tjaty - architect) and Greece (Logios - scholar) -- and each such civilization only gets great people of that specific type. So it would seem that great people are greatly reduced in scope in this iteration.

I dislike the omission of Great Men as well, while loving civ-specific Great Man lists

My biggest hope is that we'll still get Great Works even without Great Men, a la tile improvements without Builders

I think Codices in the Antiquity Age evidence this kind of mechanic

This is confirmed.

I wonder if that means Codices in general need to be stored somewhere (Academy?)

"Great work slot" sounds good to me, as it implies that all great works can go there. Missed opportunity to include Phidias or Praxiteles imho (I guess there are just too many Greek "great persons"). Of all the possibilities for Greek great works, choosing Sappho's Hymn to Aphrodite is a bit disappointing for me. Even if we just consider writings, there would have been so many options that had a huge influence on the world.

I'm definitely feeling mixed on this one. The unique people look excellent but it seems a shame that some civs might not get them at all, and I'll miss the global competition for the best great people.

That said, the gameplay impact of great people from Civ VI can easily be replicated / transferred onto the great works themselves. I'm just not clear how we get great works, beyond the codices that you get through masteries?

I could see that in Age 2, you can sponsor Great Works/People with money in competition with other civs. It would fit the medieval and early modern period that you can acquire architects, thinkers, and artists from foreign places if you offer them "jobs". Could make for some nice events/quests that are shared by civs ("auctions" or fulfill conditions at first, later one great people threatens to leave if you don't improve some things etc.).

I think this is a very creative development of the Great People mechanic. Global GP competition in Civ 6 in my opinion led to a snowball effect where early investment in a particular type of person was enough to corner the market almost completely and keep recruiting them throughout the game.

Civ specific great people with specific functions is a very cool idea and nicely emblematic of Greece.

Good point on the different mechanics for different Ages (and different civs would fit with their age)

I like the current change cause I felt the great people mechanic in 6 was too overwhelming, too many options, hard to keep good track of. If they add something akin to it later, hopefully it is in a different format.

For example, maybe they could have some kind of civilian unit to great people mechanic kinda like the legacy, if you complete some objective you get a unique version of a civilian unit from a pool based on the age, kinda like a mix of great people and heroes from 6, albeit not as broken as heroes.

For example, doing something military objective on Antiquity before the age ends would get you a unique named army commander, that has some extra bonus than the normal army commander that you can keep, maybe forever or maybe just for that age.
