Greater Writers can't make Great Work later in the game?

    hey guys. so i have this problem that i always assumed was a bug, but i've experienced it for as long as i've been playing VP over the last few years so i'm wondering if it's some kind of mechanic or limitation that i'm not aware of.

    at a certain point in the game, my Great Writers can no longer be used to produce a Great Work. they can only be consumed for the immediate culture boost. this seems to happen around Turn ~170s+ish or so? i can't say for sure, but might start happening in the Modern Era, it seems to always be around that time. it works fine until later in the game.

    so my question, is this a bug? or is there some kind of limit to Great Works of Writing that i'm not aware of? i've tried relocating them to other cities, reloading the game, etc. i always have plenty of Writing slots available when this happens, so that shouldn't be the problem. other Great People seems to work fine like Musicians and Artists, its just the Writers that always seem to follow this behavior. it's quite annoying, but i would like to know why this happens. thanks.

    EDIT: i'm using the most current version of VP full that includes EUI, but this has happened on previous versions i've played as well.

    There is a set number of Great Works of Writing available. Once that's been exhausted, you can no longer create any more. The more civs you play with (or the bigger the map size) the faster they will run out. Writers run out fast is because everyone gets a free Writer and they are the first Culture Specialists to become available. I think that there will be more Great Writers incorporated to VP soon, as there's been Artists and Musicians in the latest patch. Until then, you can use a mod for more Writers, like Krajzen's.

    Google for the following civ 5 mods : "Krajzen's Great Artist/Musician/Writer's packs" these will solve your problem and are fully compatible wih VP. Been using them fo rmonths!

    Won't say more for now, but among the 49 new GWWs recorded (34 for the first batch, for Asterix Rage fears too much memory consumption), 23 are from the Atomic and Information eras (with authors from each continent).

    great news on the additions.. OP issue is very pronounced in 43 civ, often i get zero GWW in those

    On the subject, I'm interesting in trying a 43 civ game. What map/settings do you recommend?

    good question... for every 43-civ game, i make a few small edits to VP's "worlds" table, and assignstartingplots.lua, to increase the barbarian spawn rate and natural wonders... 43 civs on a map crowds out the default barb (even raging) settings very early, putting any civs the depend on the early barb spawns (germany iirc) at a disdvantage, and makes the NWs too rare imo. I'll try to post the pinpoints to these (either here or its own thread) next time i'm loading up a new game, as i can't recall exactly where i make these changes off the top of my head

    in-game, i think huge map is best (sometimes i increase its size slightly via above edits as well), often with low sea level but this is moreso optional.... even on a default huge size map things can feel crowded rather quickly (if you spawn mid-continent you'll be pressed to even get your core 3 cities founded). i think the rest is not so important

    there are a few mods that are quasi-essential as well (ie above-referenced great works packs by Krazen etc.).

    re my above reference... does the sql make sense to you? You'll either have to copy/paste into a simple mod or find the worlds table manually and make the adjustments:

    UPDATE Worlds
    SET DefaultPlayers = 43, DefaultMinorCivs = 20, FogTilesPerBarbarianCamp = 10, NumNaturalWonders = 17, GridWidth = 180, GridHeight = 94
    WHERE Type = 'WORLDSIZE_HUGE';

    also, for assignstartingplots.lua, look around lines 6170, and find the part that looks similar to:

    need to match this number corresponding to whatever map size you're going to play on (ie huge in this code) to the NumNaturalWonders table update value, above. Note that you won't actually get 17 NW's on most maps, but the game will at least try to place this many (usually results in 12-14 NW, instead of VP's cap of 7)

    tbh i dont think any are, really.. the great works packs that add GWW are recommended cuz there are too few in VP and often you won't even get 1 without stealing it somehow, as discussed in this thread. Similar deal with wonders, but I generally only use an older version of more wonders mod without any lua overwriting, for stability sake, or no wonder mod at all. Anyway the game still plays well enough without these but you will find it extra hard on the higher difficulties to get GWW or any base VP wonders, with more competition... would be nice to be able to mod in more religions as well, and this used to be possible, but somewhere along the way VP changed how this number is determined (i think its done entirely within dll now ie not adjustable). FYI any mods that work consistently in 22 civ VP should work just as well in 43-civ, noting of course that more players means more turn processing time, and any mods that add delays will thus have exaggerated effect in 43-civ.     I don't think that this packs are compatible with VP. There are a lot of mistakes in Database.log and Era of GPs didn't set.

    I confirm that. Actually, it partially works.

    I confirm also that the next VP release will end this thread definitely. 507 additional GPs of all kind are in the new MoreGP module.
