I'm talking about crpg's btw, not any D&D type stuff. I'm sure there has been one of these threads in the past, but some new good rpg's have come out in the past year (Dragon Age, Fallout: New Vegas), so maybe some people might want to update their lists. I know I do, that's why I'm posting this. Yes you can include mmorpg's even though they almost should get a separate category. Yes we have the greatest video game thread, but that's too wide range. Especially since that includes arcade games, console games, and such. Although you can include console rpg's if you like them that much. Post your top 5 rpg's if you desire.

I'm hesitant to include new games, as you don't know if they will stand the test of time. For the longest time Baldur's Gate 2 and Baldur's Gate 1 (with tutu pack) were my favorite rpg's. But I think I have a new one for my favorite. Fallout: New Vegas. I don't know why, but I love this game so much. Perhaps one reason is it's in my local neighborhood. Although the FNV world isn't like the traffic congested hell I live in. :) If only I had a minigun on my car... I can't stop playing this game. I love it so much. So many different factions and endings, what's not to like? It's not quite the story or character development Dragon Age is, but it's quite good.

It's getting harder to compare old games to new games. As I said I love BG series, but it's tough for them to compete with the technology we have today. They couldn't even do any voice acting really back in those days. Except for Minsc and Boo. :) Planescape is highly regarded by some of you here, and I did like it. But dare I say it? I'll get flamed for this. But I say Planescape: Torment is overrated. I enjoyed it, but I only had the desire to play it once. It lacked something called fun. In some ways it reminds me of civ5. Tedious and unfun. I'm sorry I was too harsh on PT here. I should have never compared it to the atrocity Civ5 is. At least I could finish one complete game of PT which I could not do with Civ5.

My tentative list. I list 5, that should cover my favs without leaving out too many good games.

1. Fallout: New Vegas
2. Baldur's Gate 1 (I used to like 2 better than 1 for the longest time, but with tutu mod 1 is quite fun)
3. Dragon Age
4. Baldur's Gate 2
5. Fallout 2

You do realize that crpg means computer role-playing game and that many of the best cRPGs use D&D rule sets right?

yes I do. even though they use D&D rules they aren't actual D&D. I say CRPG so people don't start listing pen and paper games here. It wouldn't be fair to compare a pnp game to a crpg.

KotOR II with TSLRCM 1.7

He specifically said no pen and paper, although pen and paper are, by default, the best games ever, simply because they are whatever you want them to be.

4e ain't PnP, it's a WoW-based miniatures game :p

But on a more serious note, basically the usual suspects (roughly in order):

Planescape: Torment (I can understand to some extent why the OP says it's overrated, as I've only played it twice, and have no desire to go back and do so again. Plus, the first time was as a classic "dumb fighter" so I missed 90% of the game. However, I disagree cos, particularly on the second playthrough - where I pumped INT/WIS/CHA - it was quite simply the most amazing experience I've ever had while playing a game)
Baldur's Gate 1&2
KoToR (less so the second one, probably cos I've never gotten round to trying the restoration mod or whatever it's called)
Mass Effect 1&2
Fallout 1&2
Jade Empire
Dragon Age
(yeah, I like Bioware & BIS...)

I don't want to start a discussion on this here, but I've played every edition of D&D since AD&D (80s) and a bunch of other RPGs, and no rule system is responsible for changing the feel of a PnP RPG to me. So 4e is going to be as much of a WoW-based miniatures game as much as you're going to let it be one. That's my experience. I like every edition.

Jade Empire, I've been meaning to play it for a while, interesting to see i t coming up here since I've mostly read average reviews.

Uhm. Balders Gate was precisely 'D&D kind of stuff'....

I would also add the following.

Diablo 1&2.
Torchlight
Dungeon Siege 1&2.

But Baldur's Gate was on PC, yeah it used D&D rules but it was a CRPG. Anyway...

inb4 horrible discussion of what is an RPG and what is not. Please let's not have this discussion again.

For the benefit of this thread, I suggest a very loose definition, and no comment about other people's implied definitions!

Oh, one that I really enjoyed on the PC was Fable. The effect of your characters appearance changing based upon their moral choices during the game was simply amazing. Great storyline as well that I found very compelling.

Since the other Fables didnt get released for the PC, I have no idea about those.

Fable was spore-like in that what it delivered pales in comparison to what it promised, that being said, Fable 1 was STILL a pretty good game. Believe me though, you do not want to see how low it went in Fable 2 and especially in Fable 3. Keep the good memories of Fable 1 intact.

Fable 2 was alright (I didn't really play it that much though but watched it get played a LOT), Fable 3 was apparently as good as Fable 2 until the ending, which sucked massively.

I couldn't get into Fable 1 though I tried.

Well, also Fable wasnt released initially on the PC for awhile either....and when it did ship it was 'enhanced', in that it had a lot of improvements and extra content.

I'm inclined to mention Dragon Age: Origins, Baldur's Gate 2, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Jade Empire, and Mass Effect... but I'm not attempting to evaluate every RPG video game by objective metrics. (Like Jade Empire was a personal favorite, because I love RPGs and I love old kung fu movies, but few would probably rate it one of the best 'all time' RPGs.)

Oblivion had its problems (I hated the leveling system) but I give it extra credit because it allowed such a degree of customization. You can build your own magic items, create your own spells, even design your own character class. That alone made the game noteworthy in my mind.

Mass Effect had issues too, but I mention it primarily because it is a rich, detailed, original world and because it has so much flexibility.

Dragon Age is probably the best contemporary / recent fantasy RPG that I've played.

I know and agree. I wasn't being remotely serious in my previous post ;)

It's kinda funny, as, from what I remember, most professional reviews were decent but not great, but nearly every RPG fan I know who's played it loves it. It does have it's flaws (repetitive combat for example), but overall the fantastic setting and great story outweigh those by a long way IMO. Definitely worth a try.

Well, if we're going to call ME2 an RPG - some people get butthurt about that - then I'd vote for it slightly above KotOR II (with TSLRCM 1.7).

Juuuuuust slightly.

dumb question: what is TSLRCM 1.7? I haven't touched KOTOR 2 after 2 playthroughs right after it first came out. I thought it was pretty good. There were a lot of haters (it was buggy, and seemed to have been rushed and missing some stuff), but I didn't encounter too many bugs. I just felt it wasn't complete.
