Greatly underestimated Germany's UA.

It's actually pretty darn good. When I first read what it does I thought it was gonna be terribad, but after playing a game as Germany I must admit that it's way better than I expected it to be. What I did was focus at building warriors at the beginning and go hunt for barbarians. It's quite easy to roll up some camps especially after you unlock the honor tree. You get like a 75% bonus VS all barbarians. If agressively hunt down barbs you can get a huge army really fast. Your army grows exponentially too, because the more brutes you get the more camps you can go hunt down.

After a while of busily hunting camps my army was big enough to just steamroll most players on my continent. I managed to take both Rome and Paris in three turns. After that I had to stop though because the unhappiness was really starting to add up. Still, I think a better player than me would've being easily capable of conquering the remaining two players on my continent too.

So yeah, UA thread, share your experiences with us here.

This is kind of what I expected to happen. But it's terribly lame in my opinion to have a civ that's practically doomed to go on an early game war spleen. The best idea is to raze all non-capitals and to keep the capitals as puppets.

I agree with alpaca.
A trait that is only good if you do something that looks like an all or nothing, is not very nice.

puppets is such a nice feature... you can take all the cities and annex them as needed and as happiness allows. it might be one of my favorite new features.

no topic: german UA is indeed pretty sweet, the way the game is set up, it takes a very long time to run out of wilderness for barbs to spawn in. its not good enough to get me to stop playing Japan tho, Bushido has become such a crutch for me >.<

Not true, kaltorak. Even if you decide not to go to war, your defense force only cost half as many hammers to build as it would have normally. These hammers can be funneled into city improvements instead.

+75% against barbarians? What difficulty are you playing on?

I thought that (on Prince) the default was +33% with an extra +25% for Honour, which IMO is by far the best SP to get first.

maybe if your going Raging Barb's... I've been getting either liberty or tradition (depending on how close i start to other empires) for quick growth.

I like the fact that you can upgrade the Brutes into Swordsmen. This wasn't really clear before the game came out. So yeah, I was still using these Brutes as Mech. Infantry. I would have preferred though if you could go the Spearmen/Landsknecht route alternatively, to have a better mixed army and not locking up all your iron.

I was skeptical before I realized just how many more barbarians there can be in Civ5. They don't simply stop appearing when you explore your whole landmass.

cool sounds like alpha centauri with that civ i forgot the name :)

I am happy to hear the trait turns out better then expected. Germany was in Civ4 my favourite Civ.

What is the strongest UA from your experience? (I have only played demo > Europe).

After playing Japan and then playing ANY other nation, it's apparent how crazy-strong Bushido is.

Seriously. Its nuts.
