OK fellow Englishmen, I've had a chance to play some turns. Actually, I played several more than usually alotted, but I hope you all won't mind as I had a specific goal that I wanted to accomplish.
We do indeed live in interesting times. On the Histograph we rank 3rd from the bottom

Still moving forward however, and it should be interesting as I've never had a game that I tried for a diplomatic victory. This will HAVE to happen with this one. The world is way to huge and developed for military or domination. The Germans are WAY to ahead to go for a space victory. Our culture is sucky with ZERO wonders and cities that seem to bail on us.
I'll not be using any clever story with this one. Being away has left me with much to do around the homefront, but I'll give you the "highlights".
Took over in 1500. Building up our infrastructure - that's a good thing. Decide it's time to change to democracy. Looking at a 7-turn anarchy period. Urgh.
In 1525 I traded Gems to the Persians for Fur, Wines and 3 gold/turn
Also traded gems and incense to the Greeks for 45 gold/turn.
In 1520 the Persians and the Germans signed an MPP
Also in this year, our one source of saltpeter dried up.
In 1540, thanks to some foresight on my part

I was able to settle the city of Exeter. It is on a hill near some Russian cities, but it kills their saltpeter colony and gives us the saltpeter

We'll have to rush some improvements here to guard against flipping. It has a musketman and a cavalry unit so far for defense.
In 1570 Persia declared war on Russia. Things could get interesting if the Russians attack forcing Germany to enact the MPP!
In 1575 I traded Greece iron for 75 gold/turn.
In this year, the Russians begin to get very brazen and they park about 5 knights outside of our cities. I renegotiate a peace treaty and give up our world map and 110 gold.
In 1580 the Germans sign an MPP with the Aztecs. The Germans also are getting brazen and sending units to and fro. I renegotiate peace with them as well for our world map and 120 gold.
We are now a Democracy. Workers working faster and we can now really move in science.
I set up an embassy with Greece and Persia. There are MANY more to be done still if we want to make nice.
1590: I set up an ROP with Greece. I'll let you all know why in a sec.
The Russians are moving north. Hopefully to meet their doom at the hands of the Germans. Without saltpeter, the bulk of their army is knights, longbowmen, pikemen and even spearmen. However, there are rifelmen and even a few cossacks among the crowds. And crowds they are! They have MUCHO UNITS running about and could do some damage if we're not careful.
I've taken great pains to NOT ask they or the Germans to leave.
In 1600, my plan is enacted. Here's what I did:
I kept calling on the lowly French. They had no resources, two cities, and one luxury. For all that I gave them in tech, they were ALWAYS furious. Well, who wants these guys voting in the UN? Not me.
I loaded three cavalry in two caravels each. I delivered them to the outskirts of their remaining two cities - and it so happened that the Greeks bordered each one. With and ROP with the Greeks, I was able to set up my cavalry on the borders, and in 1600 I attacked.
The French are no more.
The city in the deep south was auto-razed after killing one spearman. The cavalry loaded back on the ship and can now help out if the Russians get to be bad.
The city off the west coast was taken, and that one had SILKS! Even nicer is that the harbor in the city was spared, so now we have a nice extra resource and the French are no longer an issue.
Good. They deserved it. Carry on.
That's where I ended.
Things to watch for:
1. The Russians and the Germans can REALLY cause some harm if allowed. The Germans are at LEAST 3 techs ahead of us so attacking them may mean lights out. The Russians are only one ahead (Nationalism) and we are 2 turns away from Nationalism. Without saltpeter, they may have trouble launching decent attacks, though our hold on that resource is tenuous at best right now. I'll feel better with riflemen.
2. Our democracy is running well. I'd suggest a beeline to Replaceable Parts to get us infantry for defense.
3. I started Khurskh (sp?) on a palace. The Germans started Universal Suffrage, but I was hoping for Theory of Evolution or Hoover. Might wish to start another later on to see if we can get the UN later.
4. Other civs are getting nasty about demands. I gave in to the Zulus and the Aztecs as I did not want to mess up the democracy with war weariness. All this points to the fact that our military my be on the low end. I built some infrastructure during my turn, but it may be prudent to start building back up again. We'll be better off with vet riflemen rather than conscripts that have been promoted from spearmen.
Well, that's about it. Beware our neighbors! Redo the peace when it's over - or even look for an MPP if they'll take it.
Give us some time, I think we can lay a smack on the Russians at least.
Enjoy.
