Hi guys,

I'm a fairly new player - after dabbling with Alex and Bismark, I have settled in playing as Washington.

I just was review the AI table that's out there, and it ranks Washington, tied with Elizabeth, for lowest "growth" at 3.

This just seems counter-intuitive to the "Manifest Destiny".

I think I am missing the difference between growth and expansion.

Anyone care to clarify?

Hmm. Are you talking about AI growing or yourself? Also, linking to that table you mentioned would be nice.

But to try to answer your question: i think Washington favors both tall (growth with 1-2-3-4 cities) and wide (expansion beyond 4 cities) approaches. Scouting bonus may reveal Maritime (and other) City States early, which is good for tall, while tile purchase bonus will allow for more effective management of both types of empires.

The table shows AI characters, which governs how the computer plays the game as each character. It's why some AI leaders grow big, why some are warlike, why some like to build wonders, etc. It has nothing to do with how you would play the civilisation, and you're free to expand as much or as little as you like.

The only unique components of a human-controlled civilisation are the ability, buildings or units.

Sometimes the personality goes against the ability, it's just the way they are programmed. Another example would be the Swedish leader Gustaf Adolf being quite warlike (as he was in history) when his unique ability relies on peace.

Sorry - I guess I was unclear.

I'm aware it's AI and not me. My question was concerning the AI... Like, when you face Washington in a single player, the fact that he is going to be only 3 growth - when the "Manifest Destiny" UA seems to be conducive to growth - that just didn't seem to make sense.

I must be confused between "growth" and "expansion" - Washington is 7 on expansion column...

I've definitely found America to be very conducive to expand quickly and grow many big cities when I play them... I would just think the AI would play those up as well, no?

I'm missing something, I think...

I think, but not 100% sure, that "3 for growth" and "7 for expansion" means that Washington, when played by the AI, is less likely to grow tall cities, build growth buildings like granaries and aquaducts, focus citizens on food tiles, and he is more likely to build settlers, and expand wide. The outcome being that he'll have many low-populated cities rather than few high-populated cities.
