Hey guys, it is been a year since I quit playing civilization now I decide to play it again because of my friend come to my house and he want to see the new civilization, so we play civilization 5 with new dlc also update that allow us to play hot-seat.

I must say, I enjoy civilization 5 battles (while civ 5 diplomacy really have no role at all), but again when I play again in huge continent with 16 civics my enjoyment get disturb by the happiness system in the game. When I start conquering others city it punish me so badly in happiness penalty.I think if the real world is work like civilization, there will be no Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Yavus Sultan Selim, Augustus Ceaser, Umayyah, that rule 3 continent in a short time. And building courthouse can only eliminate 4 unhappy peoples for 4 maintenance fee, which is pretty costly. If the world work that way, no one want to conquer another in medieval time even in modern day right now

Even there are few upgrade on happiness system to make the system more logically acceptable, not fully acceptable but partially acceptable. Like razing city now will not goes for free, I will get happiness penalty also, huge penalty really :)

Now the question is, aren't you think civilization 5 happiness system punish us so badly on capturing and annexing other city? it like nearly impossible to do a fast war conquering huge continent in a short time. This is historically irrelevant, and it destroy the main enjoyable things in playing civilization which is to conquer. Are there any mods for this happiness issue? for example a mods that make a courthouse maintenance cheaper and make the happiness issue for annexing city to be in temporary amount of time? I mean if I capture a city for hundreds year there will be assimilation, acculturation and all that stuff. This issue is really destroying the pleasure of the games, they should learn from how europa universalis settle the issue which is more logical, or else they should just go back to the previous civ 4 system, temporary revolution and temporary yearning to go back to their own motherland then finish over time because peoples adapt, generation changes.

Or do you have other tactics or suggestion for that issue? or you want to argue that it do possible to conquer huge land mass a blitz tactic on civilization 5 game? if it do possible tell me how? thank you.

Depending on policies and religion, you can have a TON of excess happiness. I had a game where I had about 30 cities, and over 50 happiness. These were all double digit pop cities too. And I had 3 annexed capitals. I raze everything else I capture. (I'd raze capitals if it let me ; ))

If you're going to conquer, you can't ignore the happiness policies that are extremely important to that kind of expansion. or just ignore it and accept the fact you'll be unhappy. Remember, tiny cities with a bunch of lux's will help offset it all.

I will take a look at it, are your case is civ 5 with the new expansion? I haven't got the new expansion yet, maybe they do lots of happiness balances over there. But I already get the latest patch and other expansion with several new civic. Back then my strategy to encounter happiness problem is by selling the city with other civilization that is far away from the city that I sell, so they can't protect it. I got money and temporary luxury and they got the city. But the AI now seem to be more hard bargainer than before, thats good news, I love smart opponent. And razing now get me a huge unhappiness penalty, I also accept that, and it is more logical than before where razing resulting more happiness instantly, is like your country love you more when you genocide others. Thats freaky.

Now my civic is Honor and Patron, I play as Genghis Khan, sound funny ya why I play as mongol but choose patron as my policies, its because I like the khan and keshik also +1 movement for horse. And I always use city state as both my shield, food buster, culture booster, even now with the patches it can be use also for tech buster. I already take one of the patron policies that benefit me double happiness for each of my city state resources but that also not helping me that much.

But thank you so much for the advice, I will take a look my game and investigate carefully with other policies that can generate me more happiness maybe it can help.

Well, imo that explains your troubles. The GnK expansion has made some quite significant changes to happiness and how to achieve more of it. 5 new luxuries (7 if you count the exclusives from mercantile city states, which by themselves grant you happiness, if friends or allies), the impact of getting a religion and happiness beliefs, directly or indirectly through building religious buildings with faith and then there's the SPs.

With just 13 well chosen SPs, you can get all the major happiness granting policies, including a completed Tradition tree - Protectionism, Humanism and the Order opener. It you want Military Caste from Honor as well or instead of investing in the Rationalism tree altogether, that's entirely doable. Protectionism alone can increase your happiness with ~40 happiness, if you by the midgame have access to at least 1 copy of most luxury types though conquest, city states or trade and that's entirely plausible with the Mongols.

If you ask me, you don't need to invest in Honor when playing as the Mongols. The keshik is so powerful that it rules the battlefield without Honor and they get a 50% promotion bonus from scratch. You'll be promoting them like crazy without Miltary Tradition just fine, especially if you give them logistics.

With GnK, it has become much easier to go really wide or for a domination win without battleing with happiness issues all the time - it just takes some careful planning :)

that sound better, thanks for your information and it a very good one, I don't get around for quite long I don't know what is happening, I will get that expansion after I finish my game. How is the difficulty? is it more difficult than vanila or less difficult? So if I start my new games I don't need to set it to prince or King first to get to measure it.
