Unhappiness caused by unit deaths (even when just in enemy lands) would seriously wreck the AI, wouldn't it?

This is already included in war weariness.

Overspecialization is not in the list, and it is something that current system punishes. Specialized cities give a more efficient empire, so it is purposely made easier for tall empires.

Unit deaths do not directly affect happiness though...? They only increase war weariness which MIGHT affect happiness later

Yes war weariness is the current solution. I don't know exactly how it works right now. Unit deaths in foreign lands would be similar, but more intuitive and easier for the player to understand. Usually it means easier for devs to maintain too.

In wars peoples tend to sustain heavy defensive losses in their homelands very well because there are usually no options. On the other hand, heavy losses in far away lands usually causes big movements or revolts back home. Anyone can come up with some cases quickly. Also, this would allow more diversity in the length of wars.

If the AI uses current happiness and war weariness in their peace decision making, this shouldn't change much as it could still be called war weariness.

Overspecialization was missing, sorry. Two last options are added afterwards. It brings a lot of micro management to my games at least. It would be fun to manage citizens more freely. Now I just micro so that my happiness is as high as possible and can't really focus anything.
