Look, the world may be on the brink of collapse, but I believe all of us - Americans and non-Americans (yeah yeah rub it in) can come together to celebrate that 160 years ago today, the slave owning Confederacy surrendered.

Sadly, the logistics of Sherman's march meant that it would have been difficult to burn much more than they did. Burning a wide area, far outside Sherman's line of march (or more technically, two and sometimes three parallel lines of march) would have greatly slowed Sherman's travel time, which would have risked leaving his army stranded in the Georgia interior without supplies, and also would have entailed sending out smaller raiding parties that would have been vulnerable to defeat in detail.
