Hello,

I have a problem with happiness if i don't create a religion.

If you don't create a religion to build temple, the early building for happiness is theatre and colossium and this late. Sometime i got lucky and i have a luxury ressource that help but this not happen ofter. I also try to go for monarchy as soon possible to get one more happy face.

I get swarm with unhappiness until i got the technologies for Colosseum or Theatre.

So i usually always go for a religion in the start to solve the problem, but i guess you guys have a solution to handle unhappiness without religion under 0 AC.

I play at prince difficulty and i have a lot of difficulty to master this level.

Thanks for any advice,

MoonZar

Just to add that under Hereditary Rule every unit in your city gives +1 happiness so 10 units it's 10 happiness. Basically HR keep you up early until you can conquer more.

You don't have to FOUND the religion in order to adopt it and build temples, etc. Anyway, the best ways to control unhappiness are through resources, and usuing the whip to bring your pop down.

Yeah of course, but if the religion doesn't propagate in your cities you can't and this happen often in my game and i get stuck with no religion.

If i connect my city with the AI cities with road who have religion, does it improve the chance to religion propagation ?

Thanks,

If you have an unhappiness problem, whip those ungrateful citizens back into line. Take two rounds of whipping an up-to-date offensive unit out of the unhappy cities, then go conquer some happiness resources or some religious holy cities.

Hello,

Actually my last game i did that but after conquered the holy capital, all other civ of this religion hated me because i declare war on their friend (-5 your declared war on our friend) or something like this.

So i was in war again 3 civ for most of the game and i lost...

The biggest lesson I have learnt about happiness on these forums is the role of whipping. I always saw whipping as something that caused unhappiness and it seems somehow counterintuitive to use it as a something to make people happier – but it really works, plus you get something nice built at the same time! Everybody wins (well, except the poor people that got whipped, that is, but they were slackers anyway).

your city has to be connected somehow to the holy city of that religion (i think, might be just any city with that religion). open borders doesn't matter, even ocean doesn't matter post-astronomy. i met cathy once when my state religion spread to her over the water. scared me, i'd completely forgotten there was another mystery civ out there, i thought i'd found everybody else!!

religion will only naturally spread to a city that doesn't already have a religion (which sounds like your case). sometimes tho the AIs will send missionaries to cities that already have a religion, to try to convert you. i've seen it twice, once was isabella (no big surprise) once was mao  .

at the beginning of the game, you must try to find out your way into helath and happiness (or just decide to kill'em all : for this you don't need to be happy and healthy ).
A quick look at the map after 10/20 turns of exploration will tell you if you have happiness resources near and of what kind.
Religions isn't the best way to this :
even if you manage to found and spread a religion, declare it a state religion and build the temples, it's only +2 happiness.
For a cost in the diplomatic domain, a cost in the research domain and a cost in hammers.
It's only worth it for spi leaders (cheap temples) starting with mysticism (a good chance to get a religion).

You can have the same benefit by researching hunting (or starting with it ) and camping on fur and ivory.
Plus you will have a double happiness from markets soon enough.
Or you can have the same benefits from gold and gems, to be doubled by forges.
Or you can have a much better deal with Hereditary Rule.

If I'm low on happy resources, I use the whip to conquering a few.
It's always been the most cost effective way into happiness for me :
- resource maybe improved already
- capturing cities brings you closer to victory (domination or conquest, mostly)
- weakening a neighbour will make the rest of the game easier
Note that you can capture religions too

Thanks you for all advice.

I'm still trying to master the level "prince" with not much success. My start are okay, i keep up first in the score. But around 1000-1200 i'm a middle civilization, my war are not very efficient, i'm behind of 3-4 technology and i don't have friendly civ who are willing to do war with me again a common ennemy.

I specialize my city very well i think, but i was never able to do a Specialist Economy city yet. I have read all article and good topic about it but i'm still not able to do it properly.

I guess i should retire ;) after 20 lost in a row for 2 win he he he...

The way to keep up in techs is often good tech trading.

Hello,

Yeah i trade a lot usually but i'm a compulsive trader ;) and everybody hate me because i have trade with their worst ennemy, i can't resist a good trade for a tech so i take the diplomacy penality.
