Have you served in the military?

If you said any of that to an officer recruiter you would be kicked right out the door. If you lied and didn't say it, you would not survive OCS. And you wan't be an officer in the medical corps unless you have completed medical school.

I may not even have to go through OCS, because I've completed medical school and post-graduate training. Naturally, I would not reveal my motives to the recruiter. I somehow doubt he would be pleased to hear I wanted to join to wear cool uniforms.

I don't know what army you are in, but a corporal is a jNCO.

That would be the army I have been in about 17 years longer than you served in.

I am subject to his orders regardless of time in service. If he says I need to sweep the floor, no matter who's command structure you think he is in (he is in the US army command structure), I sweep the floor. He could be from the motorpool guys or the other side of post, he has rank and it doesn't matter if I have time. Unless I have higher orders to supercede his, I must do what he says and it does not matter what patch is on his shoulder as long as it is US.

Ok, now lets visit reality. If a corporal from a unit goes around trying to order a bunch of specialists that are from outside his command, he is going to get his ass into a crack real quick. Thats just a pure fact from the Army that I serve in. There is simply nothing worse than a junior NCO who thinks a stripe on his sleeve makes him godlike.

In what world could a 1st sgt tell a mst sgt what to do?

When that MSG is a section NCOIC of the command the First SGT is in charge of. Maybe you were never in a unit that had both 1SGs and MSGs in it, but I have been for many years. And thats precisely how it works. Apparently you were not in long enough to get promoted past the company level. I have served in units from company level all the way to divisional. And thats precisely how it works.

Your battalion level sgts get ordered around by company level NCOs? Any mst sgt in the US army can relieve a 1st sgt of command at will.

You are full of crap. Only commanders (i.e. commissioned officers), not NCOs have the ability to relieve a senior NCO of his position. MSGs do not retain this ability, nor have they ever had this ability.

Btw, you misread your own wiki. It plainly says that 1SGs have more authority than MSGs which is precisely what I said. It helps your arguement if you can at least read your own evidence correctly.

Well, our corporals had pldc or were on the way next slot... corporal kinda designated that. No specialist made E5 before a corporal except because of ranger school.

How long ago were you in? Things have changed.

You stand corrected.

You havent corrected anything yet. If you so desire I will offer to teach you and our audience at large an entire class on this subject, and will link to the appropriate regulations concerning it. Is that what you want?

are to see the promotion rates for corporals and specialists?

Corporals and speicials compete in the same boards using the exact same criteria, with a points system used to create an order of merit list. Again, corporal slots are simply mtoe designated slots...they are not something a specialist is 'promoted' to per se, but something a commander might put a promising E4 into to handle a bit more responsibility as a junior NCO. Being part of an arms room would be an excellent example, but that corporal in the arms room is still going to compete straight up with every other specialist in his MOS for a promotion to E5. But that corporal doesnt get some kind of 'bonus points' for being in the Arms room or simply for being a corporal for that matter. All E4s are considered equally in their respective MOS's.

This has been a good read. I 've never really understood the specialist rank. In the USMC things are more clear.

Spc ranks were supposed to be technical ranks, but it didnt really work out. We used to have Spec 5s and Spec 6s as well.

I dunno, I'd always considered joining the military. My parents are kinda against it, but I feel I owe something to this nation.

Anyways, if I did sign up, it would be with the Air Force or ACoE.

I've been thinking for a long time about joining the National Guard. I wouldn't at least until I was almost done with college, and I guess it would depend on what kind of job they could give me, and if I could manage to do all the physical stuff.

I'm also an only child, which adds it's own complications to the whole thing.

I'm a specialist and we have this problem with a corporal in our company. My company has 75 soldiers, only 5 of them are privates, 3 cherries and 2 people who got demoted. All the rest are E4 and above, all iraq veterans except for the cherries.

We have a corporal that thinks it's above him to do any "joe" task. He stands around, basically he is a piece of s*** (and he really does look like a monkey with googley eyes too). He doesn't get any respect. Only thing that sucks is he is my team leader, he will be the reason I lose rank one day.

'Scuse me, what's a 'cherry'?

Mostly a new guy to the army who doesn't have a combat patch.

Though it can be used for a higher ranking person who doesn't have a combat patch (highest I've seen is a COL without one)

A combat patch means you have been deployed, though apparently there are "over seas" patches like if you serve in korea...which I think is lame.

So, Chaz...why dont you tell Echo what you would do if a Corporal from say a unit entirely outside of your brigade tried to make you paint a rock or something.
