Haven't played since the patch that made districts not stack. You pick my civ.

So I'll be relearning the game which shouldn't be too hard since every previous Civ game taught me not to cluster my cities on top of each other and that took a lot of getting used to when VI first came out.

Which leader should I choose for my first game? The leader with the most votes wins. And I will report back about the game in this thread. Sure, I'll also take suggestions on the game setup, world type, which leaders I should include in AI... Otherwise I'll pick the game setup and the AI will be random..sometimes random is more fun anyway!

Ineligible for voting are the leaders I already have achievements for. Sorry. :p
So I'll play as anyone except:
Catherine
Cleopatra
Gilgamesh
Gorgo
Tomyris
Victoria

Well if you have no preference for victory type I would suggest Australia. Very unique take on the their bonus to tiles with Appeal and settling on the coast for bonus housing. Not only is this unique, it may inspire you to take advantage of the changes to harbors (bonus yields with buildings to all tiles). We can not forget the cultural bomb from pastures as well. Australia is a very fun Civ.

Note: Playing Australia may make you like settling on the coast to much which you may have to un-learn when going back to other civs but it's worth it.

Excellent suggestion! Before I decided to make this thread, I was thinking of either starting as Australia or playing the Alexander scenario.

I'll suggest playing Australia or Persia as they both can utilize tile appeal for victory.
It is a different way to play as you'll become much more aware of the appeal system in general.

For Persia, I'd suggest Culture Victory as most people just focus on its Domination traits.
If your not familiar with Tourism/Culture victory, play about king difficulty. I had a thread detailing how to go about this with Persia.

Australia's bonus yields for tile appeal are really strong and flexible to play with. You can go any victory condition with the right terrain.

It's something of an aside, but that's not what most of the previous civs taught! Having your cities spread out is wasteful -- no point in a size 8 city hogging 20 good tiles to itself!

Above and beyond that....

Civ 3's mechanics led to the infamous "infinite city sprawl"; distant cities were basically only good for working a couple farms and running specialists, so you need pack as many in as possible to make use of your land.

Civ 4 cities actively benefit from overlap, to get the most use out of better tiles -- e.g. give the corn to the city that needs to grow, or let side cities work cottages on tiles that the main city isn't ready to work.

One of the most common criticisms of newbie play was that they spread their cities out too much.

IIRC, in Civ revolution, you got a lot of benefit out of packing cities together too.

I'll throw a vote in for Rome. The free monument and roads are very powerful and get you off to a great start. The legion is also one of most fun UU as well and sets you on a conquering spree. Didn't really care for the bathes though, aqueducts aren't very good.

So we've got votes for Australia, Persia(leaning toward culture victory) and Rome.
Anyone else care to make a suggestion?

Norway, pangaea, deity, go for science victory without conquering a single city.

You like medieval conquest? Play Arabia, don't build any holy sites, play them for science (remember your Madrassas unlock an era earlier via the Culture tree). build some heavy chariots here and there, mass ugrade them to mamluks when you unlock Stirrups. You should be able to overrun any neighbors and take their Holy sites. You'll get a decent amount of fpt anyway from Madrassas

Play as Alexander the Great and burn down the world. ;)

Yeah...I'm gonna not do that for my first game back. You tryin to run me off again?

If you quit last time because it was too easy....

Nah! In all seriousness, if you want something truly unique, play a random civ on fractal and decide victory condition no earlier than turn 100 or so.

Try Russia if you plan to play on Emperor or above. The trade route bonuses will help you out and the extra land grabs make expansion very enjoyable. The Lavra is also like on of the best districts in the game, quadrupling your ability to found a religion. The civ nudges you towards religion, but you can adapt and go for culture or science instead depending on what the game calls for.

So I'm seeing 2 votes for an Arab science victory...
Anyone else? Probably going to start soon. Get those opinions in and don't make me start another game of BE while I'm waiting. :p

I had a lot of fun playing as Kongo. Get those scouts out ASAP to try and get relics from goody huts, failing that just speed towards those beautiful, beautiful Mbanza's. Guaranteed +5 housing earlier than anyone else AND +2 food & +2 gold? Yes, please. Plus you'll be swimming in culture and great person points. You can attract tourists in a variety of ways as Kongo. Plus, not being able to found a religion is surprisingly relaxing tbh. Felt like an odd weight was lifted off my shoulders.

I actually have played a game as Kongo and it was pretty fun. I don't remember if I lost or gave up or why. Do the AIs still trade their relics away like suckers?
