I can play the Emperor level okay, and even the Deity is ok once I get going. But the problem is getting going. And that problem lies in the fact that the AI builds stuff about 4 times more quickly than they should. I started right near them once, and to my surprise on the third turn they had about eight warriors! Well basically, they get their settlers out faster than me and generally squash me into a little corner. Do any of you have any tips for early game expantion on Deity (besides hoping for a settler hut)?

Same problem with me - the first time I tried on deity I built a settler and at that time the Romans beside me had five cities. I don't think that this is quite possible. Any suggestions?

From a similiar post from about a week ago. Hope it helps. :)

IMHO, Deity limits the way the game can be played too much, i have a lot more fun at Emperor. A while back, somebody suggested going into the editor and getting rid of the extra units the AI starts with on Deity, while keeping the production bonuses in place. This might level out the early game a bit.

i'm just starting my deity games and so far i haven't taken one to completion. i have damn near mastered emperor level now.

anyway, inmy first game as persians on a standard map i was lucky to have germans and japanese adjacent to me and they went to war. japan was weakened quite a bit. i built several horsemen and immortals and attacked them taking two cities and being offered the third for peace. 20 turns later i attacked them and finished them off getting another 2 cities.
the babylonians were right beside me and they went to war with the germans. after they drove the germans off my territory i joined up and got two cities from them. i gave up because they already had knights and my chances of getting knights in time to really drive them to submission were low. besides, i figured the 4-5 turns of anarchy when transitioning govts were too much so i switched to a religious civilisation.

i am now trying to use the iroquois. since i start off with the plan of initiating conflict, i always manage to get at least 2-3 cities b4 the AI counterattacks in force and then i just can't keep the momentum rolling either due to resupply problems or being left too far behind in tech.

some people can survive the ancient era tech race with goody huts only but i just don't seem to have that much luck.
