Heavy Metal

Lake of Tears - Raistlin and the Rose

I discovered the band and this track back in ~ 2002 in my first active time here, back amongst my initial forays into metal that bemusingly enough began with Manowar. As a Dragonlance inspired metal track, it isn't the best (The Soulforged by Blind Guardian takes that cake for me), and as a metal song, it isn't my preferred cup of tea, which is more in the realm of power metal and symphonic power metal nowadays, but is was quite the find, and seems like an apt song to mention during this return.

That is one of their better ones, but they haven’t aged well as a band compared to their contemporaries or in general. Eric Adams can’t hit the high notes he could in the 80s and 90s, or even in their Warriors of the World album of 2002.

Bruce Dickinson, who I saw with Iron Maiden back in ‘24, very much still can hit the overwhelming majority of his notes; and Hansi Kursch and Blind Guardian, who I saw and personally met also in ‘24, are similarly able to maintain a much bigger register than poor old Eric Adams/Lou Marullo.

A sight that won’t likely happen again - a reunion of Rhapsody of Fire doing Dawn of Victory

If you're going to mention Manowar and Rhapsody in the same post, all I can think of is.....

The Gathering, largely unknown outside of Europe and South America, is a Dutch progressive rock band that started out as one of the pioneers of symphonic metal. This song is from 'Always...' their first album, before vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen joined and the band became more progressive rock/trip hop oriented.

Not my fav Alice in Chains song, but I used to be a huge fan in the mid 90s, it was my fav band for a couple years.

Hmm is Tool heavy metal? This was my favourite song for a while, parts are heavy metalish. The visuals fall in that same bucket for me too

A memorable story from my high school days is when I brought in either a Napalm Death (or hmm maybe Sepultura, but 70% sure it was ND) song to English class. I was the quiet calm keeps to himself immigrant kid and the objective was to bring in your favourite song, so the lyrics can be analyzed. So we were split into groups and I was selected as one of the kids who would bring in a song for another group to analyze. I guess the teacher thought I would bring in something that matched my demeanor in some way. But little did she or anyone in class know that at the time I was listening to a lot of death metal. It was the phase of my life where I heard bon jovi and metalica years ago, alice in chains and nirvana were more recent, and I was going to weekly punk shows and moshing to rockin' tunes.. and in this part of my life at least I basically wanted the music to be even harder and even faster, until I eventually stumbled onto Sepultura and loving it and then Napalm Death, which reallllly satisifed that "FASTER HARDER" itch for a while.

Surprisingly enough right before my death metal phase I was really into Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre, and early mellow electronica type music. And after death metal I transitioned into ska and more punk. And punk isn't death metal or even metal, but some of my friends in high school occasionaly went to punk shows, they were all ages and cheap, and you saw like 4-5 local bands which often veered into other genres like metal. It was great exposure to all sorts of music.

Anyway, the poor group that had to analyze Napalm Death song lyrics and present their finding in grade 11 English class goes up and puts on the song. It starts with a slow guitar ballad-like sounds, no vocals yet. It goes on for a while, there's angelic sounds, and then suddenly, BAM, the guitars go crazy, the drums are out of control, and a guy starts yelling. Well, you know, you've heard death metal. I look over and this kid with long hair in class is headbanging and rocking out.

And the teacher started crying. And that's one of my favourite high school memories, even though she was a pretty cool English teacher overall. Totally did not think she was going to cry or that people would come up to me after to ask me questions about my musical choices

I don't know if Napalm Death really belongs in a metal thread, it's sort of too deathy maybe? But here's some Sepultura, another band I was into for a while during my death metal phase

And here's the sort of band I used to love seeing live in person and moshing to their music in the mosh pit. I'd like to say I have seen Zeke live 2 or 3 times, but it's very possible it was just once. Who can remember such things..

Oh they absolutely do imo..Napalm Death are such a big name, and excluding death metal would be like hmmmm..not allowing horror films in movie threads ;)
Sepultura are thrash metal (like Sodom or Kreator above).

And since i like horror films:
