For the past two days my sister has been complaining that she couldnt connect to MSN Messenger and today when i tried to log on in the smug younger brother way i found i couldnt log on either it puzzels me, i cant even get to my emails on hotmail.

The error message that pops up says

We could not sign you into MSN Messenger. It appears you are behind a firewall that doesnt allow a direct connection to the internet. We tried to sign you in through a HTTP proxy server, but your Internet Explorer proxy settings are either missing or in correct.

I am usign version 6 of MSN Messenger by internet connection is through A.O.L version * but ive also tried through Version 7.

I know this is the wrong froum but the problem is pissing me off adn as this forum gets the most traffic i thought id post it here.... please help......

I couldnt be less familiar with MSN Messenger (and I havent been anywhere near AOL in a long long time) , but heres a stab in the dark: by any chance have you recently upgraded to AOL version 9? Oh look, here comes a giant hand descending from the heavens to pick us up and drop us someplace else!

any mod can delete this, its just another ****ing **** AOL problem what the hell is wrong with them anyway....

A $$holes O n L ine

Try changing your setting as far as cookies and security. Something similar like that once at home. Meh.

I can get into MSN just fine with Trillian.

You haven't turned on some firewall recently, like the one in XP or Norton or something similar? They might block any program trying to connect to internet, unless the program is registered to be okay.

Microsoft recently updated some of their protocols so that 3rd party companies can no longer connect. If you are using a 3rd party company try using the official version and if you're using the official version then upgrade to the latest version. BTW Trillian is still connecting for me so far. www.trillian.cc

Try this, it always works for me.

First go here, copy an IP address & take note of the port number, then open I-explore, goto "Tools" in the menu bar & open "Internet Options" and click on the "connections tab", go down to the "LAN Settings" button, which should open up a new little grey window thing with two sections and the bottom one should be called "Proxy Server". In that section, you should have a check box labeled "Use a proxy server for your LAN". Check the box then paste the IP address into the the place where it is asked for and then type in the port number where that's asked for.

Click the Okays and try to sign in again.

It may not work with the first IP address you choose, so if it doesn't, you should give it a couple of more shots before dissmissing is as "not the problem".
