Hi Guys - I wonder if anyone can help me here? 
Some background - my father's PC recently got seriously infected with various viruses & spyware, he's a bit of a novice & had an ADSL connection without firewall running, no antivirus as well as no anti spyware sw loaded!! To cut a long story short, I reformatted the PC & reloaded Win XP along with AVG free antivirus, Spybot S&D, Spyware Guard etc. All this went to plan.
As I knew that SP2 was available via the MS site I went there to have MS check for possible upgrades & download the various patches. This didn't go to plan as the MS page just hung there saying it was looking at my PC & checking for upgrades. I waited 10 mins (the connection was OK) - still nothing.
Through a PC magazine, I got hold of the SP2 upgrade & 'manually' upgraded. Once the patch was in the new 'security center' told me that the firewall & virus were on, however the 'automatic upgrade' was not on & the settings needed attention through the Control Panel 'system' icon. When I checked this setting everything appeared OK, the radio button for 'automatic' was checked - no problems. I then revisted the MS windows upgrade site to see if that situation had been resolved - no, still the same as before!
So the situation for now is that I'm happy with the PC's general security, however I cannot pick up any upgrades from the MS site (critical or otherwise).
Any pointers please??
