my buddy and i both have new HP notebooks, and both have BtS installed, and it plays fine on single player for us both. we want to play a LAN game or multiplayer game and all we have is a Cat 5 cable ,and a USB connector cord. how do we play a LAN game, we don't see each other in the LAN lobby. how can we play each other, what do we need to do or what cable do we need? we aren't very computer savvy but we love to play Civ, it really helps pass the time. ANY suggestions? post here or send to graypc50@yahoo.com thanks a million and yall stay safe back in the States.

Pins 1 & 2 cross with pins 3 & 6 respectively as far as I can remember. Will be a bit difficult without a crimping tool and spare RJ-45 connector(s).

Would be easier if the laptops have Wi-Fi to connect to each other using an ad-hoc wireless network.

Obviously how easy it is will depend on the operating system as well.

graypc50,

First off...Without getting too political... Thank you for doing what you're doing! :) I totally support anyone that is willing to head over to Iraq. Regardless of which side of the issue we're on, I wish you and everyone around you the best!

With all that mushy stuff out of the way...onto the networking fun!

Unfortunately I know of no way to use only a regular cat-5 cable to network two computers together. But there might be a way with what you do have. And I have a lot of questions for you.

How are you connected to post on the forums? Is this a reliable connection that you could use during play? (Can you use this connection all the time?) If so, you could always play a multiplayer game using the gamespy system.

Do you have a wireless setup? Like Garyth suggested, you could rig something up like that with one another.

If no wireless, do you ever plug your computers into a router or hub? Two computers connected via their own wires to a single hub or router can create a network that (in theory) should let you be able to see each other.

If none of these work, a crossover cable would be needed. I know that you're in Iraq, and getting one might take some time, but in the mean time, the two of you could try the hotseat setup. It's not the most ideal, but it'll get you two playing together until your cable arrives.

Regardless, good luck, and be well. :)

yeah, we might not agree with whom send you there, but be safe.

graypc50,

Oh, I forgot about Auto MDI/MDIX. Which network cards do you have? Do they support Auto MDI/MDIX? If so, you should be able to just plug them in and go for it. If not....well back to the drawing board.

If you really want to undertake the making of a crossover cable yourself, and you do not have proper networking tools, then you can splice wires. A friend of mine was kind enough to make this image for you:

As you can see, it has a hefty disclaimer because you run the risk of ruining your cable all together. Even if successful, you could mess up the cable. The wiring is twisted for a reason, and by untwisting a few inches and changing the route that the data travels on could really foul up that cable. :crazyeye: Only do this as a last resort.

I highly recommend that you try to get someone to send you a crossover cable. ...Unless you're feeling adventurous and destructive. Only then should you try the make-your-own-crossover-cable thing.
