Help me get better on Emperor!

Looks like Spansih just stopped plotting in your game. I accept it's hard to focus on micro when recording videos. I think people would like to hear more about why you are making decisions. You could try to make some plans before playing. It would really help those trying to learn from your videos. Didn't mean to be too negative. I spend a bit more time thinking about things. Plus I have played too many SGOTM games where micro is key.

What is best for GS on space? Should they be settled or bulbed? They are worth 1500+ 3xpop. So one could add 1500+64x3=1692 right now. Settled right now would add 6x1.75=10bpt. With OU and other buildings could be 6x3.25=19bpt. Even more if I can switch to rep civic.

So better to bulb edu? Current tech levels would be a 6 turn tech?

I'm not sure, I guess it depends on AI tech pace. I see several options on what to grab with Liberalism, one of them Representation, but I guess I could go as high as possible. On that note, I forgot how do you guys tech Lib, do you get to 1 turn before completion and then switch to another tech, trying to get as far as possible? How do you check if you need to burn it? When any AI gets both education and philosophy?

What's the ROI timeframe? A 100 turns? That's 1900 beakers if settled. I'd say 1692 beakers now is worth at least double, not the least beacuse we have more wiggle room with what to grab with Lib (i.e. a more expensive tech).

Yep settling is rarely optimal for any victory condition, good old snowball system.
Academy can pay off, especially with financial.
Bulbing is often worth more than those beakers you see, for space you most likely want Oxford i.e.,
and bulbing Edu should give you Ox sooner, so those beakers gained can be added to GS bulb value.
Just one of many examples why now = very often better in this game.

In iso it's kind of nice to settle the first GPerson.
You get it quite early, so there is many turns for it to generate beakers, you can't really bulb something useful, the unit upkeep of the GPerson is not neglectable.
You often get it in a period when your slider is close to 0%, so an academy is worth nothing.

Regarding lib, I usually tech so I have 1 turn to completion and then start to assess how far I can go.
When an AI has philo+edu, I rarely dare to wait more than 1 turn after that.

Self teched edu as only 4-5 turns at 100%. (Had no GS) Not really run a golden age yet. Perhaps a bit late. Building 5-6 uni now. Just grabbed great lib. Capital 7 turns for uni after forge. Perhaps should of teched MC sooner.
Annoying got a great prophet. Really not run a GP farm this game. I could run a golden age now. A religion would really help city builds here. That and org religion.

500ad save great people for future golden ages? Should get 113-150 for uni in capital. PP should help too. Need machinery first.

Would rather do golden age after OU built or once all unis whipped. Whipping before a golden age would be a pain too. Grrr.

Perhaps should of run golden age much sooner. :(

Played on a bit. Kick started golden age. Really not sure on worker builds here as most games I am normally winding up AI with war.
Zara has gone war mode. Hopefully Spanish as targets. Can never be 100% sure. Probably not even ready. I think I can get Spanish to pleased to backstab him. Assuming she does not back stab me.

Need to decide on civics and religion. Got a few cities near a great person so pacfism and religion are useful. For Oxford uni org religion helps. Most cities on wealth for now.
Slavery is okay but gradually need to switch to caste as workshops get going. My gut is to do nothing civic wise.

Bulbed a lot of PP, Astronomy and (soon) Sci method will be part bulbed. I figure I can easily get 7k tech from lib. For communism I will need lib. Grrrr.

I could use GS and other GP for a further golden age. This frees up civic options. That or wait for nationalism. Better to wait in case I get an unliked GP.

I have avoided gunpowder so far as it blocks GS bulbing to electricity.

Finished the game, launched the spaceship at T270 (arrived 1800 AD). Not ideal, but my fastest space win yet.
Was way too conservative with lib, could've bulbed something much higher than democracy, but oh well. Compounding effect, as we said. Mistakes of the early game like going for culture buildings and wonders took their toll.

YT made videos take ages to upload, I dissaprove.

EDIT: I'd still be 3rd in Civ4 Hall of Fame I guess, if not for 2 fewer AIs and no espionage. I guess continuous videos could count as "no cheating" ;) Knowledge of the game evolved so much in the last few years...

Oooh, start looks juicy. Imma try to sub-t250 this when I get time. Hold my beer ...it'll be my first sub-t250 on emperor standard speed if it does happen. I've done it on noble, on deity...never on emperor though, for some reason. Maybe because emperor is that awkward difficulty where the AIs start not being as much of a pushover as I want them to be (as in, I can't literally bring entire civilizations to their knees with just half a dozen lazily whipped units), but are still weak so the overwhelming force I have to use on deity is by far excessive; and it also feels like everyone techs as slow as molasses.

Yeah lib Democracy with this game is a mistake. No one yet has edu in my game. I can currently take electricity for 7k beakers. I have a GS so radio for nearly 10k should be easy.

Currently on 940 BPT at 100% 1000ad. So this needs to double really for space. Ox uni built.
Greeks now in war mode. Got Zara and Spanish to pleased.

Up to 1200ad. Eventually took radio from lib. Ignored democracy. Started to build a few levee. Factories available next turn. Spamming workshops in places. At some point I will want railroad. No real plan for corps here. Science 1752bpt with help of research/golden age. All Ai pleased or friendly. Demanded 70G from Greeks and this was enough to stop plotting.

Got some nice fail gold from sistine chapel. Almost 800 fail gold. Ai had some fail gold too and I traded for about 850 gold. I have been reorganising trade agreements to take Ai gold for trade.

How useful is railroad? Guess it speeds up troop movement and helps hill production.

1210ad infantry is pretty nice for a non SGOTM game.

I have never teched democracy myself. Curious if there is some merits about it.
Is the primary thought the statue of liberty? I imagine that would be kind of nice if you are playing on a pangea map and have a large ammount of cities?

Or is there some tricks with universial suffrage / enmanciplation that I have missed?

Maybe I could of skipped constitution/corporation too. The extra trade routes seemed nice. Albeit not really worth it?

I hope none of these comments are spoilerish. Hopefully the OP wanted some advice on space.

Don't really do space games. Should I be building coal plants too?
With state property that kind of rules out corps too?

I'm not sold for state property on this map, except if you didn't get a GE. Most cities grow cottages from very early on and have most infrastructure already in place. With 20-30 cities that only have a Granary, Forge, Factory & Coal Plant it would be a different story.

If you go for fastest possible win then yeah, probably coal plants. I usually research plastics so hydroplants/nuclear plants for me (or specifically in this case I built TGD with GE).

Bad news...BAT inexplicably crashes my game :(. And I'll be busy for the next few days or even weeks. I'll get around to this eventually, though!

U...two questions - 1) When does the crash occur..in game randomly or as you exit? 2) Are you using the unsupported beta version in Steam? (I think you are but just making sure as we discussed this a long time ago)

As for question 1, I know that BAT has had an odd issue with Music when exiting to the Main Menu. Solution is to simply go into options and disable Music, i.e, the checkbox below the volume control. I though this issue was not present with Steam, but I've played without Music for so long that I don't know anymore.

A popup appears asking me to load the mod. I click OK. I load the mod, the game tries to start up again with the mod...and when it's almost done loading, the program just exits without a trace.

I'm using the original release version. Should I not be?

Still playing on. 1420ad. Apollo almost built. About 8 or so techs left and spaceship parts to build. Ai seem friendly for now albeit catching up on techs quickly.

Nevermind @lymond , fixed it. Turns out I had to reinstall BAT. The first time, the antivirus messed up the install. I can now start my cottaging spree on all that delicious FP :D.

t97, bureaucracy tech is in and I have close to 250bpt at 100%. Those cottages look juicy :yumyum:...who needs food resource in capital BFC when you got floodplains galore? There needs to be a subreddit called /r/civ4cottageporn and this capital should be among the top results.

Used 1st GS for academy and now my cap is a monster cranking out over 125bpt at around 500BC. My teching is leaving everyone else in the dust. I can lazily get trebs in 10-15 turns if I want and push over the other AIs like a stack of dominoes - maybe I don't need trebs, just a few maces and crossbows. Or I can continue spamming/whipping settlers and get 20 cities out peacefully, no problem. This is a relaxing pleasure cruise compared to the deity Boudicca iso grind that I just completed.

The early game was kinda slow, so I countered the lack of fast food by using a never-seen-before technique: size 1 settler without imp :crazyeye:. Barbs were off so I could just walk my civilian units wherever I want unescorted, and my city center tile was about as strong as it could be, so it made sense to build a settler entirely using that, a mine, and 2 chops. And besides...gold + corn + oasis, getting that ASAP would do my economy wonders. That paid off, with me grabbing my 2nd city site on t25, I think the earliest 2nd city I've ever managed. Oracle'd MC too - it would've been a waste not too with marble + mysticism starting tech (though I didn't go for CS because Izzy in the game means Oracle goes pretty early).

btw not a fan of the BAT terrain textures but loving the new skins and animations :).
