How is this possible? 2 food in a grassland square who's irrigated, this is supposed to give me 3 food according to the civilopedia. Is this a bug, do I need a patch to upload, or is this right? It's only my 3rd turn or so in the game and having the nationality of Irquis or something like that.

Hey Willem, you Dutch too???

Yes this is the Depo (starting government) penalty anything producing more than 2 on any one tile gets a -1 penaly!

So the Irrigated grass = 2+1-1 = 2, no bug....

The wheat tho is a bonus food (+2) so...
Grass (2) + Wheat (2) + Irrigations (+1) - Penalty (1) = 4 food

Since it gets the penalty right away anyway (2+2-1 = 3) the irrigating does help General rule: Mine grass, Irrigate "brown"
EXCEPT: Bonus grasslands like the wheats, Irrigate them!

Together with the Agriculture trait, BANG.

OK Here goes.... STOP building the settler!
-Irrigate the Wheat (Just SW of Amsterdam). Then road it.
-Mine and road all the tiles directly around amsterdam.
-Build a Granary
-Chop the forest while building the Granary
-Build nothing but Settlers

This is known as a Settler factory and works because you get 5 extra food. You can grow 2 population and produce the settler in 4 turns. You have all but won this game!

Greetz from Amsterdam :)

Yep, you need to go for Republic or Monarchy as soon as you can, the only tiles I irrigate when I'm in Despot are "plains" tiles since it still does good to irrigate them in Despot.

You should not irrigate a bonus grassland tile anyway. You have a wheat tile to use instead.

It is ok to irrigate a tile that will yield more than 3 food as you will gain 1 from it. IOW a cow will net you 3 if irrigated, even in despotism as you only lose 1 for the penalty.

Then when you get out of depo, you get a big bonus.

Well I doubt that you want the extra food when you say switch to republic. You will be better of having a mine on that grassland. You get 2F 1S this way in either government. Having an extra food is not as useful to me as the extra shield.

True it could be the case in a city with few grass tiles and few plains, but that is what proves the rule. Most of time you will want more shields near the end of the age to build things.
