So, i've always had a fascination with other languages. It's always been a dream to learn another one and i realized that since this year in school i've got easy classes that i need to do good in, it wouldnt help to have something to keep me busy.

So, are there any good sites/books/etc. that i could use to learn other languages, i think i'll start with french since i took 2 years in HS and it'd be the easiest to jump on.

Oh, and free, if you can.

thanks :)

Are there any evening classes in French anywhere near where you live? A class would allow you to learn the nitty-gritty like grammar and such instead of stock phrases, and the classroom environment is helpful (if you aren't understanding something).

well, the grammar comes to me easily and all that.

as for the classroom thing, i'll consider it. i'm not entirely opposed to it, but i tend to be a self teach type.

try esperanto first, you'll learn it very quickly.

@warpus. don't you mean 'beret'? ...and chelsea???

oh, and how should i learn esperanto? there arent any classes around here i think. and is it really a useful language? i mean, i know french isnt exactly useful in america, but there are more speakers in the world.

It is not a godd idea to self tech yourself a language because if you can't speak it right you will sound like a fool. I see no benefits gained in teaching yourself a language.

If you are going to teach yourself a language, make it Spanish or something more phonetic. Spanish is immensely easier than French anyway.

Depends on what you already know.. If your 1st language is English, then another germanic language (like German or Dutch) might be easier.

i took 2 years of french in HS so i would have a decent idea of most basic things and how they sound. but i see what you're saying

which is why i'm not going to go 100% teaching myself.

I think it is a matter of personal experience. Personally I come up with lots of questions that I can not answer for myself and thats why I need a teacher.

ahh, that is true.

but did you learn before the times of the internets?

German would definitely test Mr Dictator's claims about grammar coming easily to him... :shifty:

haha, yes. yes it would.

i'm not a fan of germanic grammar at all. i've read a bit, i'm definatley not a fan.

Maybe you should go for Latin, like I have. To learn a absolutely useless language is instant "culture" points for you. I hold it isn't as hard as many say; it may take a bit to name down how to decline a noun, but then it flows pretty easily. The language comes very mathematical and has little abnormalities in grammar, not to mention it is 100% spoken as is written.

there are many free courses on the net. it usefulness depends on what you do after that!

You say you want to move to England in the future.

UK people: Besides English, is there any other language needed to know in the UK?

I would say Spanish or French. They are both great languages.

Move to a foreign country. Live with poor people. Provide labor in return for your shelter and food. I bet you learn the language quicklike. You might even pick up some culture.
