Help! My wife hates civ!

I use a panic screen that switches to some softcore p0rn. My wife has yet to catch on, and although she's still not crazy about Civ she did except my gift pearl necklace last night. :king:

 I think I would rather be caught playing Civ III than that...:crazyeye:

I tried using that line on my wife: 'At least I'm not browsing porn!'

She just looked at me with that If-I-ever-catch-you-doing-that expression that let me know that this was not the best line of reasoning to pursue.

Sorta surprising how often a game-disk can disappear...

Sorta surprising how appealing Spider Solitaire can become, too.

I made a backup of mine, and keep the original put away, for just such an emergency. :D

Well I'm going to have to make my joking more clear next time.

any wife/gf who has problems with their S.O. gaming too much sounds selfish and immature. sounds like she wants to be the center of attention, especially if she watches lifetime. If she cannot compromise and allow you to have hobbies other than her, theres problems.

Ok, female perspective here (and I AM the Civ player in this family).

It's not the having a different hobby or a center-of-attention thing. It's the fanatical concentration we players put into the game.

My husband gets home from a fishing trip and tells me he just caught his biggest fish ever..."Come look!". My response..."That's nice, dear. Be there in a minute."...husband 3 hours later, "Do you want to see the fish before I cut it up?"...my reply, "Not now. Can't you see I'm in the middle of a battle?!?!?".

Or my husband decides to cook dinner for me, and dinner is still sitting there untouched the next morning when I finally finish my game and shut off my computer.

THAT's when the spouse begins to HATE the game, and I've had to learn to "register" when it's important to my spouse to have my full attention immediately. That helps a LOT!!! (OMG! even when I'm in the middle of an important battle :p )

That is the issue in a nutshell.

We (players) just have to learn to come up for air, smell the coffee and experience that great big room that has the real high blue ceiling. :D

gma,

that was an outstanding post  thanks for sharing :goodjob:

i guess i can chime in here, too, as my wife pretty much hates all things Civ. and this has been going on since the days of civ2 - before we were married  so i tease her occassionally and mention that "you knew of my affliction" when we got married, so back off!

anyways, over the years, it got worse b/c i discovered the ownderful world of modding and got hooked. i'd spend countless hours in front of the pc trying to build my little scenarios. and in the early days, i wasn't so proficient at building mods. so i'd get frustrated and then to top it off, the 'ole lady would pitch fits saying i spend too much time etc etc. that's eased some though as i, fortunately, have become far more proficient and the aggravation isn't there.

a few years ago, we purchased a laptop. and let me tell ya - that was a God-send b/c i got her hooked on spider solottaire and it sort of off-set my civ time b/c here she was...matching away and in an inpenetrable zone [sounds familiar]. so to this day, we each have what we call our 'down time' where we 'zone out' and do our little thing.

some of the BS i've fed her over the years in a lame attempt to justify my addiction to this lovely video game:

"hon, you might not believe it but i'm famous. no, really, i've had thousands of people across the globe download my scenarios."

"it'll all be over soon. i promise" - i said this in the summer of '05 right as i was about to finish off the last version of my Cold War mod. of course, several months later, i got sucked back into again when i began to re-draft my Imperialism mod :)

God may bless the single ones!
I am so happy,i am not married and can play civ, everytime i want,but...

Mothers are an equal to wives by serving as CD-killer:sad:
You cant even ask your mom:"Mom,wanna play civ?"

I see,JDallison has solved his problem.That is nice:goodjob:

Very similar to my experience. Spouse is going to bed on a Friday night, "Are you coming, dear?" "Sure, just let me finish this one battle." I was still "finishing" when she came downstairs the next morning, and then I proceeded to nap away half of Saturday.

I've tried to reform my ways since then.

I was still "finishing" when she came downstairs the next morning, and then I proceeded to nap away half of Saturday.

My lovely bride would kick my butt if I tried that: she wouldn't let me nap at all the next day, and if I got grumpy she'd probably yell at me. She'd say it was my own blankety-blank fault, get over it. I think it's kinda funny, actually.

Of course, I would never do that, because I have to be up pretty early every morning to get her off to work. (Aside: I tell everyone that she's at preschool all day while I'm at home working. :D )

Peace once again reigns over the Allison household; all is quiet on the western front. As long as I don't miss any important deadlines, I should be ok for a few weeks or months.

I'm not married and I don't live with my mom, and I still get grumped at. I think gma said it best, it is our obsessive attention to this game and the time that it steals that gets in the way of real life. The best way to do it is balance the time playing with time spent with our loved ones. Be thankful that you have someone that cares enough to be envious of this game......

Any wife/GF that cant allow their man to enjoy a little civ, is by my standards obsolete and needs to be upgraded :D

That requires Future Tech 70 though, so you'll have to hurry up with all those science farms. :p

Mine hates it too. The way I keep her and me happy is to take breaks and sit with her while she is watching House Hunters. (obsessively) Sometimes I come up with new strategies during thses breaks.

WTF DUDE! You are the man, right? Turn that situation around... has she ever played CIV to please you? I dont think so, so why should you kiss her *beep* and watch House Hunters??

Let me quote that Sage of the Ages from his epic appearance in that landmark cultural event known as The Muppet Movie:

Rowlf the Dog said:
You can't live with 'em, you can't live without 'em.
There's somethin' irresistabullish about 'em.
We grin and bear it 'cause the nights are long.
I hope that somethin' better comes along.

Rowlf is truly wise.

The sad truth is if I didn't have my wife to keep me in touch with reality I'd probably lost my job and then I wouldn't be able to play civ with out electricity or a place to keep it in. Playing 6 hours a night plus when I'm supposed to be sleeping is not good for adults. It's kind of scary if you think about it, how it can keep you there in that spot so long until you're either too tired to see or too hungry to think or the old call of nature is screaming it's head off. Maybe I should get some astronaut diapers like that one that drove cross country had, that would eliminate one reason to step away from the computer!

Here is today's Dilbert adapted to civ:

Dilbert: I saw a fascinating documentary about Civilization 3.
Girl: In other words, you like Civilization 3 more than you like me.
Dilbert: Yes, but I didn't realize it until just now.

It's a bit of a gambit . . .

Kind of hard to do if the most you can get out of an hour is 10-15 turns.
