Forum rules state that a custom avatar can be 100 x 100 or 6kb, whichever is smaller. I'd like to know if there are any tips on image filetypes/manipulation that will allow me to create a 100 x 100 pixel avatar that will fit into 6kb. I can't seem to do it with a jpeg file, even at the lowest quality level. As you can see from my current avatar, I had to make it 40 x 40 in order to fit into 6kb. Any advice appreciated. (I'm using Photoshop, BTW).

Use GIMP if you do any more complicated work.

Irfanview with the plugin pack. I can tell it the max file size to save the image with, and it automatically adjusts settings to get it to that while keeping the best possible quality.

Use Gif or PNG and play around with the color palette. In Gimp you can find it in the menu 'Image' > 'Mode', where you chose 'Indexed ...' In Photoshop it is nearly identical.

Or just use RGB and be done with it.

This is a forum avatar which will be 100x100 at best
