(AoD II) Hmm, not sure if this is a possible bug but I purchased a hardy pioneer from the homeland as I wanted train additional ones to work my lands. I trained an IS from the school but once trained he didn't have icons to build roads or improve lands. Ok, that might be part of AoD's rule set. But the real problem is that the original pioneer I purchased from the homeland no longer has icons to build or improve either. Any thoughts? I've posted screen shots just in case...

I'm not sure if it is different between AoDII and Vanilla, although I wouldn't expect it to be, you need to equip them with tools.

Well, that did it. I sent one back to the city and changed his profession to hardy pioneer. It took 50 tools from city inventory and he was then able to terraform and build roads. Still, strange that the original pioneer I purchased needs to be "re-tooled". I can live with this though. Thanks for the help!

Since I'm fairly sure you needed to place your European hardy pioneer inside your colony to get the other to become a hardy pioneer, you will find that he was unequipped when he went inside. You lost no tools, they were added to the stockpile of the colony until you took them out again.

PiMan is correct.

@Ghoster - the problem is you are thinking that profession and specialisation are the same thing, where in colonization they are different entities.

A unit can have a specialisation, such as an expert carpenter, seasoned scout, sugar planter or veteran soldier. The specialisation requires no tools, horses, blessings, or muskets to take on.

On top of this any unit can be given a profession when in Europe or passing through a colony, providing you have the sufficient materials to give them that profession. Professions are Missionary (nothing required), Pioneer (50 tools), Scout (50 Horses), Soldier (50 Muskets), Dragoon (50 Muskets & 50 Horses). You could have a Jesuit Missionary (specialist), and change his profession to be a Dragoon if you wished and had sufficient stock of horses and guns, the same way a seasoned scout could be made a Missionary (returning the 50 horses to stock)

Hope that helps explain!

Thanks for the extra tips. I'll pay better attention to that as I play, but I'm still not sure quite why my original hardy pioneer apparently lost his profession. He had to be in my colony at the time my IS graduated to ensure I had the option to make the Indentured Servent a hardy pioneer. So I had my orig hardy pioneer working a plot of land (to keep him busy) until that graduation. Did the act of making my pioneer cut trees cause him to lose his original professions? I never clicked the CLEAR PROFESSION or CHANGE PROFESSION on the original hardy pioneer. Hmm...

Exactly. Any time you put a Pioneer or Soldier to work in a colony their tools/weapons are taken from them and go into the colony's warehouse.

Also, when you come back out of the colony, don't choose "colonist" choose the actual role they need to do, "pioneer" in this case.

I've done this too. As long as you keep in mind that when alloccating the hardy pioneer to work in the city, growing food, making cigars or whatever, his tools go into the warehouse, and could potentially get used to build something while you're waiting for the education hit to come round. When you want to take him out of the city to go back to work, he'll need 50 tools as usual to do that.

Still, you haven't *lost* anything. The 50 tools were there the whole time. As long as you didn't inadvertently use them to build soemthing else.
