Help with changing unit meshes and textures

Hi!

I've been trying a new aspect of modding, that is changing the 3D models. I have basically no experience in 3D modelling, but I was able to create a conical hat for a Musketman (to make an ashigaru). However, I can't get the textures to work. The hat shows a part of the Musketmans helmet as the texture, as I moved the hats uv mapping frame to the area of the (deleted) helmet. I have tried to reassign new .dds image with the hat in red as the texture map, but ingame it always reverts to the bugged gray helmet. What am I doing wrong? I tried to render the texture in Blender and it worked fine there, but if I export the new BR2 model and assign it to Musketman.gr2 it doesn't work.

EDIT: NVM, I found out you need to delete all the materials from blender (from the blender file menu). Now it works
