Well most of these people I have only 1 song by. In case of eminem, I have 2.

The most songs in my playlist, of course go to the legendary Plavi Orkestar.

Some bands/musicians that I think will surely be remembered in 100 years (which doesn't mean I like all these!):

Louis Armstrong
Elvis
Jacques Brel
Beatles
Rolling Stones
Bob Dylan
Led Zeppelin
Queen
Abba
Michael Jackson
maybe Madonna

Not necessarily ones I like, and many I love or dispise, but still some of the most influential groups/musicians* of the 20th century:

Django Reinhardt
Robert Johnson
John Coltrane
Willy Dixon
Leiber and Stoller
Frank Sinatra
Elvis
Muddy Waters
John Lee Hooker
Little Richard
Sammy Davis Jr.
Bo Didley
The Beatles
Jerry Lee Louis
Chuck Berry
The Rolling Stones
Pretty Things
The Who
Bob Dylan
Joan Baez (sp?)
Greatful Dead
The Yardbirds
Jimi Hendrix
The Doors
The Kinks
Pink Floyd
Frank Zappa
Yes
Deep Purple
Queen
Rush
Kiss
King Crimson
Sisters of Mercy
The Stooges
Tom Petty
The Ramones
David Bowie
The Sex Pistols
Dead Kennedys
Slayer
Black Sabbath
The Scorpions
Led Zeppelin
Van Halen
Cream
Iron Maiden
Black Flag
Judas Priest
The Melvins

* Note that this has to do with who has influenced rock a great deal. I couldn't give 2 sh!ts about most other types of music. Though I believe "classical" music, Jazz, Motown and Bluegrass warrant my attention, I just don't know much about it.

Purely in terms of influence (or spin offs) or being the first in some way:-

Yes
Genesis
MC5
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Cream
The Yardbirds
Rolling Stones
Beatles
Elvis
Black Sabbath
Van Halen
The Animals
Bruce Springsteen
Pink Floyd
Jean Micheal Jarre / Vangelis
Tangerine Dream / Kraftwerk
Led Zepplin

plus many more (brain fade setting in)

this list is in no particular order and expresses no particular preference of the compiler ;)

Who would be remembered in 100 years?

Hmmm...

Besides "Elvis", "the Beatles", "Pink Floyd" and "Nirvana", the obvious ones I mean, these would definitely be influential:

Radiohead
Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Queen
Michael Jackson (uh well, he will be remembered)
Louis Armstrong
John Coltrane
Keith Jarrett
Miles Davis
Frank Sinatra
Metallica (whether you like it or not, it'll be remembered)

PETER GABRIEL!!!

Best lyrical writer musician philosopher of last 20 years, some of his works are sociologically inmense. Really thrilling songs like: Family Snapshot (an assassin´s diary), Moribund the burgermeister, The Family and the Fishing net, San Jacinto, Intruder, and a lot more...
His work and voice are much better appreciated live, not limited by studio versions.
Also does a lot for world music.

How no-one mentioned him is unbelievable... Instead a lot of you mentioned mostly crap commercial music.

Those you mentioned are mostly famous, but that doesn't make them genius or even good.

Popular = Bad (the majority don't know about music)
Musicians should choose who are the best (not radio rankings cos people don't know about music)

Notice that the list isn't what is good, but what is influential. If I only went by who is good, my list would have 7/8 of those bands deleted and different ones added.

Awright!!! Some love for ELP! Rock on!!! :goodjob:

In terms of actual historical significance, you gotta count U2 and Bob Marley & the Wailers. Elvis and the Beatles are only historically significant in and of themselves.

I have a fantasy in which Rage Against the Machine are one day studied in history books. Yeah right!

I agree with you on the points made on U2 but not the other 3.
Elvis was the first superstar. The Beatles pioneered music as we know it today and Bob Marley?Ask anyone all they know about that man and all they'll be able to tell you is smoked a lot of pot.
