HISTORY OF ARETE - THE TRIAD DYNASTIES

The Shattered Millennium (4000 BC - 3240 BC)

THE ANTIMEDIUS DYNASTY

The entire saga started with a terrible civil war raging between a Triad of three factions under the leadership of Antimedius, himself a leader of the Philosophers Legion. Antimedius, also known as "Shattered", managed to form a coalition of three tribes, starting out with Philosophers Legion based out of Arete as the ruling class of the nation, with the Protectors of the Faith as the clergy and the Warlords as the soldier class as the base of power, they managed to crush the Tribal Council and Timus the Protector in a three-sided civil war that lasted for several hundred years pre-dating 4000 BC, with Supreme Lord Antimedius, The Enlightened One, standing as the winner by the end of the day.

The civil war was between two clashing mindsets of wandering tribal councils of elders that wanted the right to make everyone listen to them, whether they lived there or not, or of a despotic system of faction-run city states, each ruled by a sovereign Lord. Each side claimed they had the right to rule, but the Triad prevailed with a system of landownership to clan members and the right for a city belonging to each clan. The war was also over the very soul of the Aretans, Mighty and ambitious Antimedius faced Daveshack, a noble and wise leader that wanted to share his power with a court of elderly and wise advisors, named the Tribal Council. Antimedius was above all an aggressive man, wanting to conquer his neighbors, but also equipped with a strong philosophical base in all decisions he made, consciously seeking sort of core, groundbreaking truth in all what he did. Daveshack wanted a system where wealth and massive projects should be the core of Aretans lives, to let his Tribal Council govern and oversee massive developments with the help of subservient peasant workers. Timus the Protector left the Tribal Council, believing more in the creation of a vast empire well protected by his elite protector units. During the Ancient Aretan Civil War, Timus the Protector defended a hill for so long that he retained his independence within the Aretan lands, but yet had to accept sovereignty, The Tribal Council Elders became the leaders of the class of farmers, fishermen and gatherers surrounding Arete, and thus became the base for the opposition.

Well after the Civil War, the Weapons Masters came, juggling with their clubs and slings, and thinking themselves stronger than the Warlords, these were lead by Vandal Warrior and Duke Blackstone, young and ambitious men that came too late out of the forest to be part of the civil war, but they managed to entertain the Aretans with their club-tricks by the final days of the Civil War.

The Aretans, under Antimedius leadership, wandered to wild protests from the Elders, that wanted to stay, towards the coast, and founded Arete between three hills and near a most promising fishing bank. The fishing canoes went out very soon, as the first beginning of livelihood in Arete, which was the main life for those in the Tribal Council. Timus the Protector and his men started out as migrant laborers, walking around in the wilds slaying wild boars and horses with their wooden spears, to get protein for the ruling Philosophers Legion Class, to feed their soldiers and scouts and their clergy. Inside Arete, the Philosophers experimented with a wheel, to map the skies, and to experiment with transporting goods in man-carried waggons, carrying pig, fish and horseflesh around in the city to the clergy and thinkers.

Since they initially had problems in slaying the running pigs and horses, they decide to learn how to hunt properly, and found some canine animals they named dogs, to help drive the wild boars and horses to one side, so that the hunters could stab them and bring in the food, as well as learning how to run fast.

All by a sudden, the Prochon Warband, sent out to look across the lands, sent back Lord Civius with a sack of seeds for growing white grains named rice, which became an excellent source of food in addition to the fish and pigs already in the city. Lord Civius had met the Yassans, who taught him to grow rice. Lord Civius spread this knowledge to all the Aretans soon after arrival, and the city flourished.
Lord Civius could tell that the Warband had managed to seize the Yassan people and make them pledge loyalty to Arete, in front of the Spanish that just before had massacred another people, the Zuthuris, just south of Arete by the Color Coast.

Only a few hundred years later, another warrior with the roaming Warband, came back with a tamed dog, sheep and horse, this was Gaiyut, who brought Animal Husbandry to Arete, having met the friendly Sahashunas in the wilds near the Babylonian lands. The Prochon Warband did the same here, seizing the village just in front of the Babylonians.

After a terrible attack by hungry lions, fought off by brave Timus the Protector, who sacrificed himself fighting them off, the Prochon Warband was joined by the Zerani Tribe of wandering healers, just outside the forest. The Zeranis put leaves and salves onto the wounds of the surviving Warband members, that almost died, and thus learnt how to heal during lengthy marches.

The Prospectors Millenium (3240 BC - 2360 BC)

THE BALLAZIC DYNASTY

The Antimedius House fell into decline, due to many undeserved hardships, and his heir apparent Ballazic took over. Antimedius the Enlightened One was the great star that formed the Aretan nation, and Ballazic the Organizer took over. However, a third house, that of the Protectors of the Faith administered this regime as a powerful Clergy. Both the Philosophers Legion and Protectors of the Faith found the Paradise Hills most interesting, with the gold there, and decided to learn how to master the secrets of Earth. Various perpheral sects such as Monks of Magma and Brothers Material sprung up to serve these needs, as Turf and Surf Guild sprung up to serve the dietarians. Ballazic and the mighty clergy headed by the Grand Mystic, influenced by the Monks of Magma and the Brother Material, were all focussed on the rocks and what was beneath. As tunnels grew and useful metals was found, including copper and gold, the residual rocks became a pastime for resting miners. These resting miners began to inscribe various clean slabs with their symbols. Motivated by this interesting pastime, a language rooted in Philosophers Legion ways, Faith religious ways and a core of miners language, the new system of writing developed, ideograms at first.

The Gaiyut-Blastoid Scout Expedition left Arete in 3160 BC. They went westwards towards the Prochon Warband, that decided to head home. Gaiyut-Blastoid discovered the South Cape, the Western Spanish Border, yet more dyes, and then decided to head north towards a desert, which was to be named The Blastoid Desert.

It did not take long before Arete began to tame the pigs in the Pig Farm of the Lost Cause (2640 BC). As they travelled north, they met a lone hermit coming from a different continent, who told them that there was only one God coming from a distant land, this happened 2680 BC, but they got to know it 2600 BC.

The Gaiyut-Blastoid came over a tribe of riding nomads, the Masserites, befriended by the Blastoid just ahead of a Babylonian Army of Bowmen, yet again showing supreme Triad talent in convincing small tribes to join Arete. The Blastoid was thrilled, as he happened to own the very horse pasture outside Arete, being a part of Philosophers Legion. Only 40 years later, The Blastoid and Gaiyut got to learn that the Babylonians were on a slave raid to hunt down the Masserites for slaves, as the Babylonians began to take slaves.

The Blastoid sent home a messenger on a horse to his Horse Farm, and developed a stable there for taming and training horses, effectively rendering the Legion ideas of horsed chariots obsolete. By 2440 BC The Blastoid Horse Fields were completed, just in time for the Protectors of the Faith to realize they could use these horses to bring their belongings to Paradise Hills and settle New Giruvegan there. Thus began "The Departure".

The coming of Blastoids Horse-messenger coincided not only with the Protectors of the Faith leaving Arete, but also with the coming of the Prochon Warband to the city and the sudden "Vandal Rebellion", a riot where fishermen, pig farmers, miners and other less privileged in the Aretan society rebelled. The rebellion, made by the Weapons Masters and the Tribal Council, was crushed by the Triad with the help of the Prochon Warband, which barely held the Antimedius Palace.

The Triad City Era (2360 BC- 1680 BC )

THE AELBREOCHT DYNASTY

Having crushed the Vandal Rebellion, where the Ballazic Dynasty had to step down for the Protectors of the Faith, who decided to leave the city and give back some of the power to the Philosophers Legion, began to develop ways to inflict damage over distance, the slingshot was too short, so they came up with the bow, inspired by what they learnt from the more expert, slaving, Babylonian bowmen.
Arete had quadrupled in size by this time, to become more than (POP 4 2320 BC), and the new Warlord Bodyguard, lead by Nizol, was instituted to defend the Antimedius Palace .

By 2280 BC, the Warlords decided they wanted to leave, both the Bodyguard lead by Nizol and the Prochon Warband began to tell their families and pack for heading up to the mountains, where their kids would not grow soft of the corruption of Aretan life and politics.
The Warlords also feared the extreme fervor of the new religious regime of Spanish Hatshepsut, that replaced the old religious ways with one of a powerful state temple devoted to the Spanish Pantheon.

Throughout the next two hundred years, the Aretans learnt how to use bow and arrow for their horsemen and men that defended the city walls as well as building the first mine on the hill they originally came from, where the Elders wanted to stay. The Elders could now stay, as miners. As the sense of a new dawn emerged, with the travelling Protectors of the Faith ransacking their own souls for an answer, a sort of mysticism emerged in the Arete civilization, as the pilgrimage to the distant Paradise Hills made them realize several things about their own Giruvegan lore. By 2120 BC, New Giruvegan was founded on the most resource-rich, yet barren Paradise Hills, where only the prospect of a promising rice paddy and the distant Elephant flesh were considered real source of provisions for food.
The Prochon Warband that escorted them, realized they lost their role as the defending warrior class, as Protectors of the Faith formed their own army of archers.

The Warlords left Arete 2040 BC, and Thunderdome was settled 1840 BC near the Hot Gates Pass in the Prochon Mountain Range. There were only some rice nearby to provide them, so they had to take Lost Causes Pig Farm for their needs. Immediately, they started to erect the Phallic Monument, Nizols Erectude, to signal to the Babylonians that real men lived here, and should stay away. By 1720 BC, Thunderdome had as many people as New Giruvegan, and was still growing fast.

Read more on the travels of Gaiyut, Blastoid and Diamondeye here.: How they managed to kill wild lions and wolves, and how they became experienced hillsmen 1960 BC. The same year the first farmlands near Arete was completed, and they realized they needed to put the rice somewhere, along with the smoked meat and dried fish, so they learnt how to make jars to preserve them in, pottery.

1920, Arete grows Pop 5.
1880 Arete build their first Archer Army, to be commanded by Churchill. Inspired by the experience, they let Nizol build the first Horse Archer Army, in knowledge that the Arete cavalry was the continents finest.
