THE POWER OF RELIGION - The Holy ones

(For those not wishing to read a long post just go to the next post for a shortlist of variants and please join would enjoy playing)

Looking for players that want to experience the power of Religion.

Setting up a SG game that has the following variants.

Must at least acquire two religions and spread the word to all nations whether by boat or foot. The missionaries do what they do best spread religion.

At least two shrines must be built in order to take full advantage of the impact of spreading the word.

The civilizations that join us as brothers and sisters of the faith will be considered our ally and if attacked we must come to their aid. This can be done in the form of negotiation with the attacker to stop the war or declaring war on the attacker. If our brothers and sisters of the faith ask for help we cannot deny them. All civilizations that do not share our faith and do not change even after spreading the word/coaxing must be conquered. If we acquire another shrine through conquest then we too must begin to spread the word. (Except Buddhism/Hinduism) Should any civilization keep it borders closed to keep out our missionaries we must attack within a reasonable amount of time which can be discussed amongst team members as to strategy. When we discover theocracy we must stay there to ensure that other civs do not contaminate our cities with other religions. (Only exception is when we want to add second/third/fourth religion to our cities when a shrine is built and Pacifism or Organized Religion can be only considered during adding religions to our cities.);)

Monasteries must be built in all cities and cannot research “Scientific Method” until this is accomplished. This pertains only to our cities and not cities acquired through conquest unless it takes place well before 1000ad.

We must always remain religious throughout the entire game unless forced by UN to Free Religion. If we control UN Free Religion may never be put forth. We must always vote against this and if we gain control seek to undo Free Religion.

Religious wonders must receive priority over any non-religious wonders.
Meaning that if you have a religious wonder in the building list, that must be built or if there are two then you can build the one that you would prefer, however we must build at least 5 Religious wonders. (ones that produce Great Prophet should be prioritized)

What I consider Religious wonders:
Stonehenge, Oracle of Delphi, Angkor Wat, Sistine Chapel, Chichen Itza, Hagia Sofia, Notre Dame and Spiral Minaret.

There is one small catch and might make it tricky however I felt that it may prove to be a challenge. Religions acquired may only be either a philosophical religion such as Taoism/Confucianism or monotheistic such as Christianity/Islam or Judaism. Buddhism/Hinduism may not be acquired through research/spread meaning let the other guys get it first. Should we acquire it through conquest then we may not spread the word of these particular religions.

Just to make it a little interesting. I am not sure of Buddhism is polytheistic in nature however I just thought limiting what kinds of religions we may acquire might make it more interesting.

If a Great Prophet is born and it is a choice of shrine or religion and the religion is of the five we may research then go for the religion. Our GP city must always be set to Great Prophets and cannot be contaminated by any other wonders other then Great Prophet producing wonders. So Sistine chapel, Taj Mahal and Notre Dame are to be built in a culture city and not for producing Prophets. Hagia Sofia can be built in production city if it can be acquired. (Only exception to this rule is National Epic for the GP city to maximize available Prophets. All specialists must be MM’d to ensure all are Priests in GP city only. If max is achieved then specialists may be appointed as needed. Also if other specialist are added to GP city they may never exceed priests or have a result that diminishes acquiring Prophets. If that is the case they appoint citizens or work tiles.)

Once the Great Prophet does not offer religion and no shrines need to be built he can be added to GP city as super specialist. The more the better of course, giving us more production and cash. With Angkor Wat that will make production even better.

Temples of our shrine religions must also be built in all cities. Cathedrals can be built as much as we are allowed given that they are subject to the amount of temples built.

Once we acquire our first religion we cannot use slavery after that since we are religious and have compassion for our citizens. Any civic but slavery may be used.

No other variants.

Map type: Standard, continents
Victory conditions: Cultural, Diplomatic, Conquest, Domination. NO SPACE RACE
Civilization: Aztecs
Permanent Alliance will also be enabled.
Speed: Epic or Marathon
Difficulty: Prince
All other settings standard (version 1.61)

My preference would be the Aztecs since it will take a lot of convincing by the sword when our missionaries are unable to do so. My second choice would be Mali since his financial trait really can runaway with shrine and lots of cities of the shrine religions. I would prefer to play continents and do not like Pangea. I love naval battles and ocean supremacy. I am tempted to play Isabella just once however would prefer to wipe her out in a "religious war". SO CRUSADERS LET US GO ON A QUEST FOR OUR FAITH.

I hope that the variants are understood and any questions I would be happy to answer. This is my first time on SG and welcome new players ergo playing on Prince. I wanted to make it challenging provoking thought and consideration whilst you are playing. Looking forward to players and no pressure as to how fast the turns go just keep it within 48 hours if possible and if unable to play within 48 hours just do a skip and soon as you want to play you will be up.
I also would like to play on Marathon to prolong the game however for those that prefer epic we could put it to a vote.
I think 6 players would be sufficient and once we decide on civ, speed we can make other considerations.

A shortlist of variants:

1. minimal two religions/two shrines
2. Monastaries built in all cities prior to 1000ad (in controlled cities only)
3. no free religion unless forced by UN
4. Spread religion to at least three nations (all cities)
5. Aid brothers/sisters and deny no request
6. Theocracy to be used except when spreading another religion
7. At least five religious wonders/ one city can only have priests as specialist
8. Only confucianism/Taoism/Christianity/Islam/Judaism may be researched/acquired
9. Great Prophets to be used for religion discovery first before shrine
10.All techs can be researched only cannot pursue buddhism/hinduism until another civ acquires it

Map type: standard, continents
Victory conditions: Cultural, Diplomatic, Conquest, Domination. NO SPACE RACE
Civilization: Aztecs
Permanent Alliance will also be enabled.
Speed: Marathon
Difficulty: Prince
All other settings standard (version 1.61)

My first post is a bit long so I decided to make it easier to ascertain what the variants are. Hope this makes it easier.

I have noticed when playing against other civs they make big gains by doing this and have often wanted to try it. Some civs stay religious throughout the game and do good in science with a strong military. I would like to see what kind of result would happen financially if we had all 5 shrines and 3 civs observing our religions. WOW what a money maker.

Not a bad start location and look there be gold too!!!!

wow. i like the variant rules on this game. i've just made the transition to prince and have little exp. at this level. i have also never taken part in a succession game; lurked my share though. at present i think i should continue to lurk. probably more qualified participants interested. however, if a couple days go by and a spot is still open i may join.

about game speed. i think with the varaint rules marathon would be good. besides, who likes a quick and short sg?

Codeman,

You are more than welcome to join as I actually would like new players to join as I am also playing SG for the first time. I am comfortable playing on prince level and have won on monarch but still getting the hang of it. I too would enjoy marathon.

I think once you accomplish at least two shrines and spreading the word everywhere you can run away with the game.

At least 4 and I would say max 6

I notice it can usually take about a 4-5 days to spark some interest

cool. i'll play. i'm here to learn. just be ready for questions as i'm not skilled on this level. i just learned (from reading another game) how to post game save.

Ok you're in. You've got one up on me Codeman as I still have to look into how to post a game save. Maybe you could elaborate. And since it is our first time at SG I am sure we can help each other. Of course I will be always happy to answer any questions and I am sure as we find more players we can all learn working together.

here is something someone posted in another game i have been reading. it seems pretty simple.

While you're writing your reply, click on the Go Advanced button. Scroll down under Additional Options and you'll see Manage Attachments. Click on it and a small window will open that will allow you to browse your hard drive to find the files then upload them.

You're limited to how many images you can upload per response as well as the total size of all the files you upload to the entire forum. If you have a web site that lets you host files, you can just point to them with a URL in your post. http://www.photobucket.com/ and http://www.imageshack.us/ are two free sites that you can use to upload images.

Thanks Codeman :goodjob:

I think I would be interested in trying this one. I've only played private single player games so this would be my first experience in playing with other people too. I enjoy founding religions and when I go that route I usually go for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam just because I usually enjoy playing as a crusader conquering the polytheistic heathens, lol. So these variants would be up my alley. I usually like to play as Saladin though for the Philosophical trait but I can see Montezuma's Aggressive trait coming in handy for "convincing" the neighbors of their need for salvation.

LuvToBuild,

You said it brother. It's exactly what I had in mind lots of cash and knights to convince to them our ways. You are in and I found a another player so we will be starting soon. You're in and I will add you to our roster if that's ok.

And BTW I welcome first timers since it's a first for me too however I have been following SGOTM games and played them all on my own to get a feel for this.

Gentlemen ... I'm up! :)

A few questions, though:
1) How come you set up not to go for buddhism/polytheism, Cosmichail?
2) What about OR and Pacifism? Why only Theocracy?
3) Why have you set up the limitation of the Great Prophet (GP) being primarily used to research other religious stuff?

Regards, dot

Wonderful guys it looks like we have four players:

Roster:

Cosmichail (Black Knight)
Codeman
LuvtoBuild
Dot (Richard the Lionheart)

Since LuvtoBuild mentioned "crusaders" and of course my great love of these great knights I would like to name each person a certain kind of knight. I would prefer to be the "Black Knight"

Choose you own but here are some ideas:
White Knight, Paladin, Templar Knight,

I am sure you Crusaders will have your own ideas on what knight you want to be so tell me and I will add it to the roster list. Paladin's are a favourite (warcraft they are great) but I can't be a Holy Knight veiling a dark mask. So I will be the "Black Knight" the evil one HAHAHAHA

As to the game good starting spot and I think settling where we are is perfect since we get "wheat, sheep, furs, and fish in the fat cross. Surprisingly a lot of furs. How come I can never get a spot like this we I play on my own. Fortunately it's prince and if played right you can mow down the AI. Just don't let the get big so "Naval battle is imminent". Strong navy will be needed.

Unless you want to start with four we could wait a one more and then start.

I will go along with the consensus. Also one variant I left out of the short list is that once we are religious we cannot whip. We can raze of course but no city that is our religion. Any buddhist/hindu can be razed of course. HAHAHA

If you read my first post (kind of lengthy), but we can use pacifism/OR when we are spreading another religion.
I had Crusaders in mind and wanted to have an opposing religion that was shall I say "multi god in nature". In order to maximize the effect I felt 5 of the harder religions would offer a challenge since prince can be a level where you can overrun the AI.
As to the GP I felt it important to get the religions first and again somewhat of a challenge there.

If the GP has no religions to research then of course we use him for a shrine/super specialist. Again establishing a GP farm with National Epic is very important to get lots of GP. From our start there are a lot of plains so we might have to conquer our way to a good GP farm site.

If anyone doesn't like certain variants I am open to suggestions as the game hasn't started yet. I just like to make it a bit of a challenge.

Hope that clarifies things Dot..

Richard the Lionheart, that would be.

Settling on spot is fine. The gold in the upper right looks like being on another riverside ... :hmm: I personally dig settling on riversides. This is going to be my first SG anyway. So if you can provide good links on how to upload stuff ... I'd be glad to get some :help:.

On Cosmichail being the 'Dark Knight' ... :dubious: :twitch:

On Marathon ... pffft, baby, baby ... I found the epic on the current GOTM stretching like bubblegum ... ...

BTW, did you edit the start, Cosmichail, or is this just a random start?

Hey Ho
Hey HO
I am the "Black Knight" HOHOHAHA (deep dark laugh)
Just love that Lord Vader.

No Dot lucky start. I can't get one of those on my own "ever". I just did it this afternoon and first time there it was. My jaw dropped and said "thank you thank you Civ God you are so kind". I will now sacrifice 1000 slaves for you. Especially those three furs in the beginning are good no need for research for those. (well hunting but we have that already)

So Dot are you ok with variants. With a start like that we should have control over at least continent soon. How many turns each should we do in the start on marathon? Does 30 sound good.

As to uploading Codeman indicated how that is done in a another post however it is quite easy by hitting the "go advanced" and at the bottom "manage attachments". You just upload it from your computer there.

One other thing that I discovered in another thread is that when you are playing the game you can hit Print screen anytime you wish and it will save a picture in screenshots folder. I just couldn't imagine hitting print screen, alt tab, waiting 5 minutes and then using paint to paste and save, and then waiting five minutes to get back to game. But I have seen so many pictures so I thought it can't be done like that anymore thank the game maker.

Edit: I notice too that most people have good video card and the graphics the pictures have are great. Mine will be low res, crappy video card (NVIDIA 64MB VRAM) however they still look ok.
Don't want to buy another one just for a game although I have two games that would benefit from a better card. Xplane and Civ IV.

"stretch like bubblegum" is it juicyfruit? mmmmmm
In the beginning it's slow and boring but I am sure we can make it interesting. :ar15:

So ... on getting the prophets ... even without the philosophical trait it shouldn't be too hard to get quite some prophets out ... depending on stone nearby and getting useful wonders ... :)

The save is the one I've submitted for the current GOTM. I won't win anything with it ... but ... just in case you're interested. ;)

Regards, dot

EDIT: I don't mind waiting or starting either. On Graphics quality ... You'll only have the shades of animals ... since my graphiccard will crash otherwise ... ... sorry.
