HNDY10 - AWDG Regular Pangaea No Pillaging

350 (0): Istanbul swordsman --> settler. We need to stockpile a few settlers for offensive use.

Aydin barracks --> swordsman.

330 (1): We destroy a Sumerian MDI landed next to Izmit (1-0).

Three Fish and Mugla barracks --> swordsman.

310 (2): We defeat a Sumerian MDI/archer pair landed next to Aydin, losing a warrior (3-1).

We discover Literature.

Denizli walls --> barracks.

290 (3): We found Bingol, a three-whale town. Remember how great that would have been in Civ II? :D

Bursa GREAT LIBRARY --> swordsman.

Uskudar barracks --> swordsman.

270 (4): We receive fifteen techs as the first fruits of the Great Library.

250 (5): I switch Edrine and Three Fish to harbour builds.

230 (6): Istanbul produces our first horseman.

Izmit produces our first MDI.

210 (7): One of our curraghs defeats the attack of a Sumerian galley (4-1).

We receive Education, thus losing the benefits of the Great Library before getting Chivalry. :mad: I'm not sure I've ever seen that before.

The Maya complete Sun Tzu.

190 (8): A forest chop outside Izmit reveals BG.

Aydin produces our first pikeman.

The Sumerians begin Knights Templar.

170 (9): Edrine harbour --> galley.

The Americans complete Leonardo.

The Iroquois build Knights Templar.

150 (10): Well, a very quiet round. There hasn't been an enemy landing for nine turns.

Right now I have us just min-researching Gunpowder, to leave the question of our next tech target open for discussion. At 70% science we'd still be 18 turns away from Chivalry, or 29 from Gunpowder. We're about to complete our first three libraries, though.

Istanbul should probably build a library after spitting out another settler.

Edrine has started building veteran galleys, and Three Fish will be able to do so before long.

Sinop will need attention as soon as it reaches size five this interturn.

The south now:

I'd say Chivalry.

It will help up with homeland defense since we can protect more real estate with fewer units. We also need an attack 4 unit to put the wood to the AI, and Knights retreat when losing. There is also the cavalry upgrade too our UU.

I suppose we could just skip Chivalry and head to Sippah, but I think the AI will get to strong if we allow that.

Amazing this is Pangaea and there is no 1-tile narrow crossing anywhere.

And what if we have no gunpowder. :cringe:

I agree--Chivalry looks like the better option.

Chivalry does look good. The GL certainly got us closer. After Chivalry, we need to make our best rate to Mil Tradition.

I am sure Bugsy has. We just lost Ank10 to that (at least partly).

EDIT: Yes, lets do chivalry first. Reminincense to the same game above. I don't want to see the Ottos die waiting for Sipahi again.

Folks, I played 7 turns and had to stop, because I found that we were still in despotism! :aargh:

I don't know how this has happened. I guess after we got it from GL we just forgot about it. I think I need to replay my turns and revolt asap.

Thoughts?

Also, I find that we mined too much in our south. We need to irrigate everywhere over there and get our pop up and hire scientists. I'm going to introduce water there.

But I'm too tired to play today.

Well, replay if you like, but don't feel obligated.

Definitly irrigate & hire scientists in the corrupt cities. Cats are a decent build there, perhaps the best. Also could build court, harbor, duct, worker (if we need them) or settlers.

I didn't revolt to monarchy as soon as we got it from the GL because I learned in HNDY08 that the veterans on this team don't consider a rush to monarchy an automatic decision in an AW game. The consensus in that thread was that unit costs, and so the number of cities over size six, have to be carefully considered. Our only city on fresh water is our settler pump, and we're only building one aqueduct, so we would have lost essentially two supported units per city if we'd entered monarchy on my round. Perhaps I should have stated explicitly in my report that I'd decided against an immediate revolt, but it wasn't an oversight.

As for mining versus irrigation in the south, there's no reason to think those cities will be corrrupt forever (why not build the FP there?), and faster population growth will just get them to the size six barrier more quickly.

I don't know that, but I always revolt asap. The corruption kills us. Especially in this game, we'll not get beyond size 6 in most cities in the next 50 turns.

Currently we are also paying 30 lux which is still not enough for some towns. Monarchy has 3 MPs that we can use.

Wrt FP, I'm going to hand build it in our ring-2 city. Maybe a courthouse first.

We don't have many cities that are over size six. We may end up taking it in the shorts on unit support.

I decide to replay.

Preturn: Wow, Great Library already expired! It looks like we didn't get Chivalry or Gunpowder from it, and we can only do min research now.

Our biggest problem is commerce..very gold poor. For example, many core cities have only 3 gold! It's very important to build harbors and work on those coastal tiles, and you really miss seafaring here.

Lux is another problem. We have 5 ivory with no one to trade. :lol:

Since we are still in despotism, revolt immediately. We draw a freaking 9 turns of anarchy!

Looks like I'll do nothing during my turns.

IBT Korea starts Sistine Chapel. Iro starts Copernicus.

110BC: IBT Korea starts Copernicus.

90BC: kill landing Korean spear/archer. IBT Iro starts JS Bach.

70BC: IBT Korea starts JS Bach.

50BC: IBT our curragh is sunk by Korean galley. Maya completes Sistine Chapel.

10BC: Iro completes JS Bach.

10AD: Korea landed two MDIs. Elite swordman kills one and gets a leader! The other MDI is conscript - looks like upgraded from warrior. :lol: And we kill it without mercy.

HANDY10-10AD.jpg

I save the leader for now.

IBT we become Monarchy, and Iros start Smith's.

30AD: IBT Iros start Magellans.

50AD:

Leader is sitting in Kafa. We can use it for army (which I normally do) or rush FP. If we use for army, then we should rush courthouse in Uskudar and hand build it there in about 35 turns. If we rush FP, either Uskudar or Kafa looks good.

I've started converting mines to irrigation.

We also can build Zeus in 19 turns or less. I think it's still worth building as we'll not get Metallurgy in probably the next 70 turns.

Be careful loading the army, make sure it can fit on a galley. Just load one unit.

:goodjob:

The safe way to transport an army is to find a remote area with no roads where we will not be attacked on the IBT. Isolated coastal mountains, marsh & jungle are good options if the Ai cannot reach us via roads.

If all the coastal tiles are loaded, we will want to land on a mountain with extra units since we will be attacked on the IBT. Example: Land 6 sowrds on one turn and hope at least 2 survive. Next turn land the army (with 1 sword loaded) from a galley and load it with two more swords from the group you landed the prior turn.

Bugs I am out until Saturday, so I need a skip.

Handy - very good tactic for the army. I haven't thought of it like that, but it is perfect for the AA.
