Ho ho ho and a bottle of Tokaj! - A Magyar civ

cool3a2, my apologies. You are right - I did mistype...and missed it on the re-read. (Now corrected.)

I am not sure if it will help, but PW90 has "updated" the Mod for SuperCiv. (The use limekiln as a replacement for the forge, though I don't see what is "unique" about this.) SuperCiv is okay, but very clunky...I much prefer the dedicated mod.

Do you have a picture of the new Huszar?

You can find a screenshot of the huszár here. I also made a new button for it today. I have also finished the work on the unique building: the academy of science. It's the same like the korean seowon, but with the 3d model you can find by following the link I gave you in a previous post. Tomorrow I will do some more work on the parliaments texture, but it's almost ready. As far as I have seen the mod runs with 1.74 of vanilla civ4, but I think I have overwritten some of the changes of the last patch. So I have to do some little xml work. The warlords version is nearly finished as well. I read in a german forum that some people had problems with version 2.13 of warlords (the game didn't recognized the original cd), so the mod will be for 2.08. If there is an incompatibility I will update the mod when this problem is solved. There are two reasons why I don't upload the mod yet. I made some posts in an hungarian forum (this one) and after that Kabcsi told me he plants to translate the game into hungarian. People could switch to hungarian like they do it now with french for example (so nothing is overwritten). I could use his files then for my mod as well and at the moment I am waiting that he finishs his work. The 2nd reason is, that I couldn't find a solution for the problem with the partly yellow flag. Nobody else seems to has this problem. I couldn't find one single post about this problem and I don't know what the reason could be. The good is, that this will only occur on the peoples machines that had the white flag problem before (this problem I have solved) as well.
In conclusion I plan to be ready tomorrow or on thursday. Maybe friday...

I also don't know why they use linekiln in superciv. I can not remember a connection between this and Hungary...

I had problems with both patches (Vanilla & Warlords) that require me to reinstall both and just roll back a version.

The limekiln is NOT related to Hungarian history in any unique way. What PW90 does (which he has to do for such a large, aggregated mod) is use the same unique buildings for several civs. The shortcut is good for him, but bad for those of us really just looking to add our own ethic history to an already great game.

The Huszar looks great. Without disrespecting AC, this is much improved.

I have uploaded the new versions of the mod.
Warlods:
click!.

Vanilla:
click!

The vanilla version is for civ 4 v1.74. There may be problems like with warlords 2.13 (that the game doesn't recognizes the original dvd / cd), but there is a solution for this out there. You sincerly know what I mean. I do not support software piracy (you can trust me, I am student of computer sciences and this would touch me too), but this is not illegal if you have the original game. I am afraid that thy kick me out of the forum or close this thread, so I stop this here.
I THINK this mod runs also with v1.61. I haven't patched the game on my laptop (otherwise I would have missed something...) and the mod ran without problems although I made it for 1.74 on my desktop pc. So even if you don't want to patch the game, you should try if the mod works for you.

I have included some Hungarians as great people in the warlords version:
prophet:
- József Mindszenty

Scientists:
- Albert Szent-György
- Loránd Eötvös,
- Dénes Gábor,
- Ányos Jedlik,
- János Neumann (in the USA perhaps better know as John Neumann, but I hate it when someone translates names),
- Ede Teller (for Americans: Edward Teller)

Artists:
- Bernard Schwartz (better known as Tony Curtis),
- Marika Rökk,
- Zsazsa Gábor

I could have include Rachel Weisz (the chick from the mummy) or Béla Lugosi (and a lot of others) as well, but I think this is enough.

So enjoy the mod. If you have trouble or questions or you want to make suggestions, please post that here.

Maybe I make a BTS version over the weekend too...

Oh damn, I forgot the generals I added to the warlords version:
- János Hunyadi
- Miklós Zrínyi
- II. Ferenc Rákóczi
- Artúr Görgey
- Pál Maléter.

I forgot two things to say (it was already late yesterday...).
Firstly: asioasioasio, thank you for your modern palace model, I used it as Academy of science (unque building of Hungary). I mentioned you in the credits.
Secondly: These two versions do not include the hungarian texts. Kabcsi has still not finished his translation (that's a really hard job). Once he is, you will need to patch civ 4 with the hungarization, then install the mod. You can get more information here, but I well post it here too, when it is ready.

If there are no problems with the new versions I will delete the 1.05 from the civfanatics download database soon. So please report bugs until the last stable version is removed.

I started to update the mod for BTS. I am almost ready, there are no errors, but it crashes before displaying the main menue. There is also another problem: they have changed the CityLSystem file. I have already found an entry in artdefines_building that was in CityLSystem in warlorads and Vanilla, but there are some other that are still mising. Don't know if this is the cause of the crash (don't think so). I hope I can figure that out within the next days.

When I updated the mod for BTS and with hungarian language support I recognized a small bug in the mod. Strange, but the game doesn't care about it when starting. You can fix this bug by yourself by editing CIV4GameText_Civilopedia_CivLeaders.xml for vannilla edition and Civ4Gametext_Warlords_Civilopedia.xml for walords version. Search this entry: TXT_KEY_LEADER_MAGYAR_Arpad_PEDIA. There is an entry for the italian description of arpad. Go to the end of this entry, after </italian> you find a </TEXT>. This </TEXT> has to be removed. Go to the next <TEXT> tag (beginning of description of Szent István). If the <TEXT> tag of Árpád is not closed (that means there is no </TEXT>), close it. So this passage should look like this:
<TEXT>
<Tag>TXT_KEY_LEADER_MAGYAR_Arpad_PEDIA</Tag>
<English>Bla bla bla...</English>
<French>Bla bla bla...</French>
<German>Bla bla bla...</German>
<Italian>Bla bla bla...</Italian>
<Spanish>Bla bla bla...</Spanish>
</TEXT>
<TEXT>
<Tag>TXT_KEY_LEADER_MAGYAR_Istvan_PEDIA</Tag>
If you didn't make a mistake the game should start normally. This bug was also in the previous version of the mod. Sorry Kabcsi, that was either mine or Animas fault.

Alright, now I will start to finish the hungarian versions of the mods. I think I will have uploaded them in the evening today.

I am proud that I can tell you: I have uploaded the Magyar mod for BtS. That makes me proud is not just that we belong to the first that have their own civ for BtS (although for warlords we got it very late), it is also that with this we have beaten the Romanians (because their mod isn't ready at the moment) :p . If one of them reads this: I am sorry that my posts in their forum has caused so much negative reactions (espescially because I really didn't want to make Aranors mod small), but my opinion has still not changed. I am fed up discussing that with stubborn, conservative Romanians, but I do not regret what I did. If I see all this posts that answer to mine, I can only remember the following: it is the truth that hurts most. For me the romanian mod belongs to all these LotR, Star Wars and all these other fantasy stuff: you doesn't seem to have a leader that has really existed and some of your cities are no (original) romanian cities. This doesn't mean that I don't respect it, you sincerly paid a lot of time for that. But enough with this. I am not proud to beat you with this mod, because I would be malicious. It is only because of the positive competition that we have won. If you want to download the mod, go to file database of civfanatics or use this direct link: click!. I hope this mod runs as it should, please report if you have any trouble. I will not play this mod, since it runs to slow on my pc, so I will not recognize if there are some bugs. Hope you will enjoy my work.

cool3a2, I wanted to say that I have really enjoyed the work you and the others have put into this mod. You have taken an already great mod and improved it in a meaningful way. Again, no dispect intended toward Anima and his fine work.

Again, thank you and congratulations!

Now I am going to go over to the Romanian forum to see what the heck you said to them!

Well, there are a numerous mods now that add Hungary to civ4. Maybe there are people that are already fet up of this. Nevertheless I plan to update this one. Next version will concentrate on graphics. There will be a new modell of the hungarian parliament and of course unique graphics for the units.

So these are the units I am quite sure to use:
unit_overview.jpg

As you can see these are the units of Zerver or Avain or a combination of both. I found Zervers units quite alright. The units of one era are not that different from each other then Avains are and the bird as sign, if we understand it as Turul bird, fits very well to the early units. The only units I was unsatisfied with, were his maceman (it didn't wear a mace) and his horseman (horse archers were typical for the early Hungarians), so I took Avains horse archer and changed the Maceman. And I liked Avains crossbowman very much, so I replaced Zervers with it. On the other hand I really disliked Avains huszár (sorry, this is nothing personal...). Not becuase of the quality of the unit (looks very good), but I think the huszárs that became famous looked different. On the other hand, if we already have a knight and a cavalry unit the huszár is a bit obsolete.

There are only two units where I have still to make a decision.

The Rifleman:
a)
unit_honved.jpg

or b)
unit_honved2.jpg

I was inspired by the usual uniforms of the honvéd infantry 1848/49:
honv_d.jpg

I know there is already one by Zerver, but I didn't like its colours.

The Maceman:
a)
unit_maceman.jpg

b)
unit_maceman2.jpg

In both cases I prefer a), but we can discuss that. The only problem with the brown honvéd is, that it does not look very hungarian for somebody that isn't familiar with hungarian history. I tried to give him a red-white-green stripe (as you can see it on the picture of the honvéd officer), but when I converted the imagefile to dds I got strange colours... The reason I like the brown one more is, that in this case not all of the hungarian units look green. This would be boring I think. The grenadier and the cannon would be in the same style like the rifleman to keep the fashion for one era. The huszár would keep its unique green style to show that it is something special.

Besides this I added Matthias Corvinus as fifth leader. Some of you may say this is to much, especially for a small nation like Hungary. But I thought: why drop stuff that is already done and working perfectly? On the other hand Mátyás király was too important to don't take him. Since Kossuth's and Mátyás' properties would have been the same, I changed Kossuth to philosophic and aggressive. That's okay I think, because Kossuth was very succesful in recruiting troops and he strongly supported, even led, the revolution of 1848/49. And of course this was aggressive against Austria. In the end it does not make a big difference if we have 4 or 5 leaders: you can choose only one. At the moment I am waiting that Zerver publishes animated leaderhead for Széchenyi and Szent István (he told me that he wants to do this around 2 weeks ago, maybe I should ask him if he still plants to do so). I think the new version will be available around christmas. Not because of Zervers leaderhead, but because of my own limited time.

But until then: any comments and suggestions are welcome! :)

I forgot to say: the bts version will be modular of course and vanilla and warlords version will be still maintened.

Hi there everyone!

It´s more than a year ago I last visited the site. I´m glad to see the Magyar civ mod still rolling on. Nice work cool3a2! I tried it with BtS and everything worked fine.

Two remarks on the readme: It still says it is for Warlords, the changelog is untouched too, plus some installation instructions wouldn´t hurt.

Keep it up!

Regards

Rog

Hurra! Bal-rog is back in town! :woohoo:
Hope you will give us as many helpful and inspiring hints as you did in the "old times". Of course I will go for this readme stuff, will be in the next version of the mod. :goodjob:

BTW: more comments / opinions about the units?

@avain: You meant a), right? I didn't know the word flail, so I did a search. What I found in dictionary wasn't very helpful, the thing on the pictures I found after google image search looked more like an aggriculture tool than a weapon. But it was more like a) than b).

Yes, it was used to soften the grain after harvest and also to bash some skulls if need arise.

Just kidding;)

It's a medieval weapon and I only know the name because I also happen to like role playing games...

and the winner is... a) of course!:D
