HOF III October/November Gauntlet

Looks like my first try won't quite beat out Spoonwood, unless someone gets rep parts for me, and I don't see that happening. (first try meaning first attempt to get into the middle ages, that is) I had one where I got an SGL for CB and Alpha, but the land sucked so I blew it off.

Who are you starting with? If you are going with persia or otto, I'd try CB and pottery, as opposed to mysticism, using the 3 Alpha civs as my opponents.

I am starting as Persia. As I want to cover as many tier 1 techs as possible by the AI, I chose Germany (warrior code), Korea (Alphabet) and Russia (Pottery). Sumeria seems to research CB early on, so I changed them to Russia.

I played the first ~20 turns several dozen times already. I am going to continue like that for another week. After that I have to go on without the SGL. It should still be possible to get a good finish, but we'll see...

Maybe it's better to get an Alphabet SGL and not spend the time researching CB/Pottery/Mysticism (which can all get traded for, while you'll shoot down the middle later anyways.) Doesn't it take just about as long to research both CB and Mysticism as it does just to research Alphabet?

Well. That didnt' work out right.

Got the research right - was going to end in either 630 or 640 AD (and, I am pretty sure I'd have beaten Spoonwood on score if it ended in 640 AD, since I had 4 turn research from the late middle ages on, so I assume I had more land/people)

But the vote was a tie :(

Try again ;)

Plan is simple: Sumeria, against Russia, Ottoman and Persia. Set 'em on wimpy (Persia declared on me early in a test game), find a start with a grass cow and rivers that gave me a CB SGL and trade for Masonry ASAP. Build one or two extra wonders in the cap and make that a super science city driven by tourist income. Sumeria is awesome.

Funny thing: I built Collosus in one of my coastal cities. After I got Steam Power. I didn't notice it hadn't been built till then!!

610 AD.

Same setup: Sumeria, vs. Persia, Ottoman's and Russia, 60% water, warm, wet, 5B, with least aggressive AI (this turned out important, I think)

Got a start with flat land, rivers and a cow. Got an SGL for CB, found ottoman's nearby, built Pyramids.

Alpha->writing->Col->Philo->republic->Math->Currency->Construction, trading for everything else as I went.

Got Feudalism and Monotheism from the AI, got Engineering for free.

There wasn't a second good food bonus right near, but did manage to get a site with an oasis and FP (irrigated oasis gives 3 food for an agri civ), plus a wheat a ways away. I switched the cap from settler to wonder duty after a while and built MoM in 950 BC to kick off my GA - near the beginning of theology, I think. Cap built uni, bank, market, Copes and Newton's, then wealth till the IA. Everything else got market, lib, court and uni, except for totally corrupt cities. Aqueducts where necessary.

I had no luxes right near the cap, but got incense nearby and managed to settle around an otto city to snake a fur and two spices, plus got a gems in the middle of the jungles silks in the middle of another jungle. Was able to trade for wine and dyes, as well.

In the IA, was only able to get steam and got ironclads for free

Started railing - cap and FP city got factories and coal plants, so I could do a palace and a universal suffrage prebuild. another city built ToE.

I got 4 turn research from the early MA on, except for once where I screwed up something and had 1 turn left twice.

I got no techs from the AI other than the free ones after the AA - well, some optionals.

Hit the MA in 610 AD and no one got fission. If I got fission, I'd flip the palace prebuild... - if not, I'd have to research and I wasn't getting 4 turns - maybe 5, probably 6 or 7. I could try to get rocketry (2 AI had it) and help my chances, but if I did that, there was no way to research in any time without ruining my rep... so I took the chance and it paid off.

Flipped the palace to the UN and won the vote, 3-1.

fun fact: at the end of the game, I had no military. 26 workers was my defense force :)

Well, I *almost* had a 580 AD finish. The AIs got me Monotheism, and Engineering, while I drew Feudalism. Then all three industrial techs came out, but I could only buy Steam and Medicine, drawing Sanitation. So, I went the hospital route. Two AIs got me Fission, and I had my pre-build to finish via what's the big picture. But, it was a three person election. I had everyone at Gracious, but I didn't have any embassies. I totally forgot about them. But it wouldn't have mattered, because I 2 opponents. So, the vote went 2-1-1... inconclusive, as everyone votes for his/herself. Since AT and I have both had this problem now, anyone have anything like this on Small or larger sized maps? My victory status screen says I have the lead in both population and territory with Babylon in second in both categories also. I guess someone else (Sumeria) had 20% of the world's area also.

I forewent the CB SGL for an Alphabet SGL playing as the Ottomans with Sumeria, Babylon, and Germany, shooting for the Republic slingshot first thing. Instead of founding cities close by with my first settlers like I did in the game above, I tried what I did in my Monarch Tiny Space game. I sent two warriors out who scouted and then my first 5 or so settlers went out and got the luxuries ASAP. Problem comes as that you found your core towns later, so workers come out later and getting the FP and MoM up take longer, and you have slower initial research. The luxes help a lot later, but I've started to come to think that getting up a few core towns in the first ring matters more than luxury control. I had 3 German cities flip to me. I built the Colossus in my capital, and got another SGL on ToG which I used for Newton's. The AIs got me Invention, and I had 4 turn research from Gunpowder on, except for Electricity which took me 5 turns researching it right away in the Industrial age. After Combustion I went to Flight since the AIs hadn't gotten me Replacable Parts, which they got me just as I finished Flight. Here's some saves (not submitted)

I ran into it because I had warred to expand and Xerxes voted for my opponent. I've never had 2 opponents. I doubt it happens much at larger maps, cause you have more people who will vote for you.

I didn't have any war in that game. I don't think the AIs even declared on each other. I feel discouraged from playing a fast Tiny Diplomatic again.

I'm quite surprised that happened, to be honest - but it looks like someone else had that happen to them, earlier in the thread, too.

Maybe only have 2 opponents.

I had 3 AI and two opponents in the vote. I tried killing one off, but the third AI managed to expand enough and I still had two opponents for the next vote.

I think I'm going to try two AI, one of which I keep small, next time.

Is there a legal way to add more AI? If there were more civs in the game, the problem would go away.

2 AIs might solve that problem, but, to state the obvious, it lowers opportunities for free techs.

Maybe it's a bit early for this, but I thought next month we might try a space race game. Anyone interested in a small Demi-God or a standard Deity SS game? If so, which would you rather play?

That's a great thread! I love how Archphoenix didn't even feel comfortable with Deity at the beginning of the month, and then (arguably) played the greatest (non-Sid) spaceship game ever! Tons of useful information there also.

Wonder if we could get Tone to come out of retirement for that?
I didn't realise that I had retired. I'm just 'between games' atm.

Thanks for the link, AT. A good thread and a great submission from archphoenix.

Well, the current #1 at small Demigod space race has much room for improvement definately --> 1255 AD

This evening I am going to finish my diplo game and write up the details here...

Here we go:

Settings:

pangea, 60% water, warm, wet, 5billion years. Opponents: Germany, Korea and Russia (as Sumeria seemed to go for CB quickly).

My starting location:

I also had ivory and gems rather close to my core, which also was very helpful.

My first settler immediately went to the nearby coast and started on the Collossus right away.

I got my SGL for Mysticism:

So the Pyramids were built in 2950 BC in Persepolis.

After finishing Mysticism, I started with Writing and went on to the Rep sling shot. I revolted right away and researched Literature after Republic was established. After that I had to research Construction, Currency and Polytheism on my own and traded for the rest. I expected the AI to research Polytheism, but they did not :(.

I moved on into the MA in 1150BC and that was the result:

I got Monotheism and Engineering from the AI and got Theology as my free tech. Expecting the AI to love the government techs, I started on Education, which took me 7 turns eventually. Researching Astronomy, and Banking also took me 7 or 6 turns each.

The crappy AI just got Feudalism in time, when I finished my last tech of the upper branch, so I could trade for it. That was the only tech which I got from the AI post AA (except for their free techs of course). IIRC except for Chemistry (5 turns), I could research everything in the MA within 4 turns after that. During all that time my capital tried to finish Copernicus' Observatory, but it had a rather crappy shield output most of the time and I didn't have any time for a prebuild. So I was able to complete it 6 turns before I moved on to the IA. At that point I could have switched to Newtons' to trigger my Golden Age, but as I was able to research everything in the MA within 4 turns anyway I decided against it and finished Copes.

In 90BC I switched into the IA. The AI got Medicine and Nationalism. I could not trade for any of these and drew Steam Power as my free tech. I traded for Medicine and started with Industrialization, which took me 5 turns. After that I was 5 turns away from completing Newtons' and triggering my Golden Age. As Electricity would have taken me too long (more than 4 turns), I did The Corporation first, which is the cheapest tech of the IA if I am not mistaken and only took me 4 turns. When I started with Electricity it would have taken 5 turns. But due to triggering my Golden age one turn later, I could also do this in 4 turns eventually.

From that point on everything took me 4 turns. I took the usual path Electricity --> Sci Meth --> AT and Electronics as free techs....

The Mysticism SGL was my only one throughout the game. So I had a Palace prebuild going for the switch into the Modern Times.

I got into the Modern Times in 530 AD.

The AI got Ecology and Rocketry as their free techs, which I could buy from them. Due to that a 530 AD finish was of the table and I had to delay the Palace prebuild for one turn. But luckyly I got Fission as my free tech and the election was in 540 AD:
