@Calis you snuck in a Small Warlord Diplo game to bump me down to #4!! I wondered why my numbers were off. 550AD is a nice finish. Hard to beat; I'll need to figure out a better Warlord target I guess.

Actually I had bad luck in this game. In Medieval I got "Chivalry" as free tech and in Industial "Ironclads", and I had no SGL available for the UN, therefore I had to wait ~5 turn for it to complete. Therefore a date around 450 AD would have been possible, actually.

Oh - wow - that's easily a #1 spot. I have a suspicion that Small is better to zoom through the Ancient Age because there are more huts BUT the research gets immediately slower in the Medieval Age. When / how did you trigger your Golden Age?

Well, if everything goes according to plan, I trigger the Golden Age (by building the Colossus and The Mausoleum) immediately at the beginning of the Medieval Age, so I can use it to build universities (and maybe Copernicus'), thus, after the Golden Age I can continue 4 turn research.

I have been thinking more and more about this and the importance of an earlier Golden Age. In my TinyChieftain 490AD game, I triggered it in the middle of the Medieval Age with Maus after I had been able to get research down to about 5 turns. All my libraries and universities got built and I 4 turned everything after that. I felt like it was pretty good timing.

The hard part for me is taking a core city off of building settlers to build Maus. I desperately try to have 20 cities / settlers by 1000 BC. I have been mostly hitting 16-18, except for one time with Sumeria where I hit 25,

What is your early game build sequence? How long do you go with your capital as a settler factory?

My apologies for the late reply.
In my recent tries, I went for an early scout then worker. After that I built a granary, as I waited for an SGL (at the latest until Philosophy) for the Pyramids.
Of course an early settler from a hut is a must, too.
On the large map I aimed for ~25-28 cities. (Slightly fewer for diplo win compared to space race)
I tried to reach the medieval ages at the latest around 1000 BC.
At that point I try to trigger my GA (Colossus & Maus) to be able to have a 4 turn research asap.

But in my current game (small Chieftain space ship) I changed my approach. I went for Chamnix' way. https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/g-iii-charlie.279090/page-3#post-6993131
After 20+ tries I got what I wa looking for. Nonetheless I won't beat Tones game there. Still unluck with free techs in medieval age & industrial. Tone game is really, really good.

@Chamnix's post is fantastic! Some things I picked up:

Middle Ages entered in 2270 BC.
This suggests that he did not, as I do, wait to get the starting techs before he started popping huts. I often bypass huts so that I can trade for the starting techs and leave them to pop later strategically. Interesting.
By 1000 BC, I had 16 towns/cities, 118 citizens, 24 workers
118 citizens on 16 towns is extremely impressive. That's 7.5 citizens per settlement. How happiness was maintained....not sure. I know he did the war happiness thing but wow! Impressive to have that many citizens.

I note that he is at 1.5 workers / town, which validates my current thinking.
450 AD – complete Flight and enter the Modern Age.
I note that this is 13 turns faster than my #1 Diplo victory on Large Warlord. And, he pulled Sanitation as his free tech, rather than a useful one. As I noted in my thread, I was surprised by how fast I was going since I was playing to see what the times looked like / figuring out the level / map so I could have been tighter and lost 7 turns on Chivalry...but wow, 450 AD Modern Age is fantastic.
The space ship was launched in 660 AD.
21 turn Modern Age is fantastic. That's 1 turn away from absolutely optimal.

For now I leave the low dificulty levels and try for a huge (talking about map size) SID win (either diplo or Space race).
Had my PC running for maps overnight, which resulted in 150+ maps with at least 2 grassland cows and a river.
