I've played every mainline civ game, starting when I was just a boy. Civ 3 I put the most hours in, because as a teen I could actually understand what I was doing and play higher difficulties. So at least since Civ 3 we have had two hotkeys that I am sorely missing.
- Wait: puts the currently selected unit at the back of the queue.
- Center: centers the camera on the currently selected unit.
It seems to be the case in 7 that the game decides, seemingly arbitrarily, the order your units will take their turn during each game turn. When you select a different unit, and reach the end of their turn, most of the time it returns you to the unit the game decided will be going first. Rarely it doesn't do this, but usually it does.
So the wait hotkey fixed this in older versions. It sent the selected unit to the back of the queue. You could set several units to wait so you could work with the units you wanted to go first. There seems to be no way to do this in 7.
There are two options in the menu, first is called "Unit Cycle Remaining Movement" with the tooltip "After all other turn blocking actions have been taken, cycle through units with movement points remaining." The second is called "Auto Unit Cycle" with the tooltip "After expending all movement points for the selected unit, cycle through units with movement points remaining."
Turning off the second option seems like exactly what I want to do, even without a wait or center hotkey. The problem is, as far as I can tell, these options do nothing. I've tried playing with both on, both off, and one on the other off, both ways. Nothing changes that I can tell. I believe these options do not work.
It's been an annoyance so far, but right now I'm allied with the two worst civs against the top four remaining AI civs. It's a true world war, there are three major frontlines, with multiple skirmishes at land and sea all over the map. It's my favorite war so far. But it's being ruined by this crap. It's just a huge waste of time constantly scrolling back to your current engagement instead of playing the units the game has decided go first.
It's also a strategic disadvantage. If I have an advance go very well, I might want to break off a commander or just some units to catch some reinforcements crossing the ocean. Or if it goes badly, I may need to change my plans to reinforce that line from another skirmish while I temporarily retreat from that area.
No. Game says this unit goes first. After almost every unit's turn my view is ripped across the map and some battleship or commander half a world away is selected, which I'd rather not move until I see how other combats play out. I'm spending like 10-20 minutes per turn, which could be cut in half with a "wait" hotkey or if turning off unit cycling actually worked.
I kinda feel like I'm going crazy here because for the two months I've been active on these forums, I've never seen another fanatic mention it. It seems like it would be impossible to mod in new hotkeys but what do I know about creating mods? Is there a way to make the option work? Am I just missing something simple? Any help is appreciated.
Sorry this rant got so long.
TLDR- where my wait and center hotkeys at?
