Dying from second hand smoke is rather uncommon. I'm much more worried about dying in a car crash because of some drunk driver.

Many people get lung cancer, having never smoked a cigarette themselves.

Many people also live in the Ohio Valley

The anti-smoking hysteria has gotten pretty bad. I'm all for keeping public buildings and such smoke-free, but pubs and bars? (where I live a smoking ban went into effect in all bars from May 31, 2007 onward). And whats up with all the snide sniping comments against smokers? That's just gratuitous.

    To paraphrase Eddie Izzard:

    No smoking in bars.
And pretty soon no drinking, and no talking either!
We'll soon have to go to the library to have fun.

Personally I don't smoke, I prefer smokeless tobacco instead (the Swedish steam cooked type). It doesn't bother anyone else (well, perhaps those who like poking their noses into other peoples business, but who cares about them?) and it certainly doesn't give the coughing and washed-out symptoms that normal smoking does.

yup. I can tell you that the Tennessee valley cancer rates are high because we also have one of the lowest air quality rates in the country. It was just on the local news, not sure how I can confirm that. But the Ohio Valley lemme see...ok here we go: "Air pollution along the Ohio River is worse than on the East Coast, not in terms of peak exposures but through sustained exposure. "Power plants that line the Ohio River Valley create a blanket of smog that covers the region.'" Areas that border rivers have lots of plants of some sort. The air hangs over valleys. And from the CDC, a study in 2003, the most recent year stats are available: These states had the highest rate of lung cancer, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, indinia, Virginia, PA. These states are in the Ohio Valley. The death rate from Lung Cancer, on the other hand, is highest in the following: Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia. Now, the following are in the Ohio Valley: kentucky, Tennessee, PA, West Virginia, Indiana, Ohio, some of Maryland, some of New York, and Illinois.
The entire eastern seaboard has the highest lung cancer rates. The western US does not have it nearly so high. Before blaming all lung cancer on second hand or direct ciggarette smoke, consider that the eastern seaboard and the Ohio Valley is highly industralized, and has been since the factory was made. This area also has the higher later age asthma rate.

It's because people don't want to deal with the smoke. If you're engaging in some sort of tobacco related activity that doesn't involve you filling the air with smoke, or spitting all over the place, I don't really care.

You have managed the incredible task of showing there is more than one factor contributing to lung cancer. Are huzzahs in order?

Public smoking bans in buildings were a great idea. I can't wait for more to come. :)

I hate smoke. I don't understand how people can still start smoking. My brother, the idiot, started in his twenties. But then, he had friends that were 15-16 at the time...
