I am playing an epic game and there isn't any scientific leaders. Do they come in the modern age

I believe that there is a 3% chance that you will get a Scientific Great Leader when you are the first civ to discover a technology.

I got two in my first epic Conquest game.

It is 3% for non Scientific civs and 5% for Scientific civs. This applies to any tech you are the first to research.

Padma, maybe what you are seeing is that you are in essence discovering 2 techs because of the 1st to discover Philosphy bonus. So at that moment you are getting 2 chances instead of one, so it appears that your odds are better than normal.

Could somebody who worked on the game explain, someone said the more techs you research the chance goes up???

Your chance doesn't go up, you just have more opportunities to "win the lottery"

I see :)confused: ), yeah sure, I see. All I know is I have only gotten two at most, both of them within 30 turns of each other! One with philosophy and one I think with monarchy.

Think of it like this: you are at bat in baseball. Each time a pitch is thrown you have a 3% chance of hitting a home run. Now, how many home runs might you hit if you only recieve 1 pitch? 20 pitches? 1000 picthes? While you have the same chance to hit a home run each pitch, you will be more likely to hit a home run if you have many pitches thrown to you.

(I am not a statistician, so I could be wrong in how I described this)

FWIW, I have usually gotten one when I research Philosophy first. I know there is supposed to be a chance equal for all techs (I assume) but it seems I have the best luck if I go straight for Philosophy. ??

If you get a free tech from Philosophy, you have at least a very clear indicator that you researched the tech as first civ on the planet.:)

:hmm:
So could I eventually get 2 or 3 SGL in one turn (3 in case of well-timed ToE completion)?

I did not work on the game. But in this regard, I suspect that I have the same trait as the C3C-manual editor/translator...;)
Some manual line essentially reads like 'chances increase the more SGL you get' :crazyeye:... the statement was probably trying to point out that boosting science with a SGL may let you get the next tech early enough to get a new one.:)

I got three SL with the babylonians before I finished the middle-ages... One with philospohy, one with construction, and the last one with I believe theology.
Since then, nothing, and I'm in late industrial age... But this is my first epic game so I'm quite happy. I used them to rush the Temple of Zeus (great wonder, too bad the ancient cavs won't upgrade to anything ;)), Adam Smith and WOmen's suffrage...
These SL are a wonderful idea, I can play peacefully and rush wonders, oh boy

I got a scientific leader when my first tech i researched was mathmatics and by then i was lucky to have ivory in my second city and rushed the Zeus thing (it was awsome)

Got my first Scientific GL in the Mesopotamian Conquest.. cool!!

One question presents itself, though: do you only get SGLs if you RESEARCH a tech first? What if you get it from a goody hut? Or from entering a new era as a scientific civ? Has anyone gotten a SGL from one of those?

You mean to tell me they brought back the free tech to the first person to research philosophy ala civ2? :goodjob:

In my current game, I am Greece (Scientific and Commercial), I have spent the whole game concentrating on money and science and in some cases I have been able to hit 4 turn research. I know I have been first to reach several techs first, but not all. Still, I have yet to get a science Great Leader. I am up to refining on an emporer game.

I would say if you want more science leaders; first, you need a scientific civ. Then you need 'more chances' to be first. That means, colossus, libraries early, then currency, then republic early. Then, if you can get out ahead, you need to go for techs that are cheapest and fastest while trying to quess what the ai will go for and possibly avoiding what you think they will go for.

Beyond that, you may need to beat the ai out of republic and into monarchy/communism by instigating wars. You may need to pillage your rival's river vallies in a major way in order to reduce their science out put. And keep the ai fighting itself while you build population/science and money.

So, here a little math.

The formula to calculate the probability of k leaders appearing in n tries is
(n over k) * 0.03^k * 0.97^(n-k)
and (n over k) * 0.05^k * 0.95^(n-k) for scientific civs
So, we get :

If you are the first to research 5 techs, the chance of no leader appearing is 86 % (77 % for scientific civs) and therefore the probability of at least 1 leader appearing 14 % (23%)
If you are the first to research 20 techs, the chance of no leader appearing is 54 % (36 % for scientific civs) and therefore the probability of at least 1 leader appearing 46 % (64%)
If you are the first to research 50 techs, the chance of no leader appearing is 21 % (8 % for scientific civs) and therefore the probability of at least 1 leader appearing 79 % (92%)

So the more techs u research first the bigger the chance for a SGL..good show..

This way u won't be stuck with the chance of researching most Techs first and NOT getting a leader
