How did I take Toledo?

There I was in the beginning of war stage 2 versus Isabella. I had taken 2 cities, 1 being Madrid, in round 1, made peace and 10 turns later started round 2. I attacked a large city, don't remember which one, and took it and when I accepted the city suddenly I got the message that I had taken Toledo. Toledo was on the other side of the next city in the target line, nowhere near any of my units. I looked at the city, which I did now own, and it contained a worker (mine now) and three military units belonging to Isabella who was still at war with me. I rushed a couple of Num Cav toward the city but could not reach it so I thought it would just revert back to Isabella but no. The units left Toledo and nothing attacked it until after I occupied it.

I am confused, was this a colony thing or what?

You need to patch your game by the sounds of it. If I understand correctly, in an older version of the game there was a bug where a worker could capture a city or something to that effect. If you are using Beyond the Sword, you want version 3.17 and then perhaps one of the unofficial patches available on civfanatics.

To download 3.17, find it in the downloads section of civfanatics, because the automatic update feature of the game does not work anymore.

Toledo and the city you captured were coastal cities, right? The bug PieceOfMind mentioned happens like this: The worker was in a transport in the city. When you captured the city, all workers join you and all ships are sent to a friendly city (i.e. Toledo). So now your unit (the worker) is in Toledo because the ship was sent there, so the city becomes yours. The AI understandably isn't expecting this to happen, and behaves in a bizzare manner (abandoning the city and not attacking).

As PieceOfMind said, the latest patch will fix it. Amusing little bug, though.

Interesting and yes I am running 3.13. I have not upgraded to 3.17, any major problems with 3.17 that you know of...other than removing the tank barrage promotion which really doesn't bother me that much as it makes tank city conquest wars way too easy.
