once i got caravels up i started exploring the map. i noticed saladin had settled a small island off his coast. but looking at the foreign advisor.. he doesn't have compass yet.

how the hell! since he doesn't have compass.. there's no way he could have galleons yet. the island was close enough to allow galleys etc. to reach it.. but how do you transport a settler without a galleon?

this was a prince game btw.

Galleys can cross ocean tiles if those tiles are under your or in this case Saladin's cultural control. Maybe that's the case here?

*bangs head against desk*

i forgot galley's could transport a settler. it's been so long since i've actually done it.

well fuxx... looking at my current game, i could have transported a settler to a small island many many turns ago.

uggh.

the details mang!!! the details!!

Haha yeah. It's a long tech tree and there's definitely a learning curve to it. Sailing can be had in the early-mid BC's, and thus you can start expanding to islands that early. In LHC Cathy I had 3-4 cities settled on another island in the BCs.
