How do I catch up in tech

Im playing on monarch level and am at early industrial age - everyone else is ahead of me in tech and I am the biggest civ in the world.
They wont sell me techs and everyone hates me bar two - they wont sell me techs either.
I need to knwo a way to catch up in tech, I just cant thnk of one, how do you guys catch up when your behind?

Hi Graeme,Long time no see.
My advice is your government type must be either Republic/Democracy and if you are the biggest civ in the world,Attack them, Capture their capital and you will gain lots of things for the peace treaty in the deal.
Are all your science improvements there,are your city square is filled up with railroads?
Are you sure they wont sell you tech,never experienced this problem unless the gold is too little.Could you please attach the file and let me try it out?

Here ya go fayadi - try it (i have modded it but nothing to do with the AI just ship movement rate and extra hitpoints for gp units)

I cant really declare war because I'll loose cos Im behind in tech
Railroads wont help a bit - they only lead to increased food and production

I'm betting that you don't have enough gold, as other civs almost always will sell you techs. I waged war on the Russians and took over half of their cities and they still sell me technology.

Lowerd down your science slider to get 500+ gold per turn,once you get 1000+ gold you can buy tech,I try it and it works.

You can always buy the technology from Persia.
I am just playing your game a little bit,I have a lot of civ games to play! I will play if I there is sufficient time

i've learned that being behind in tech isnt so bad if youre fairly isolated (like on your own island). the A.I. never invades en-masse. so if youre playing with space race turned off, i'd just relax, get your techs as they come, build a crap-load of modern armor and kick butt in a domination victory.
