How do I conquer an island?

I'm playing my first game.

I have conquered all of the Russian cities except one that is located on a tiny island. It has two troops in it, and it is only one tile in size.

I can't bombard it with my caravelles or my ironclads, and I can't put land units on them.

I know I must be missing something.

You need to build galleons. They are the first troop transport unit.

You need to place your troops onto a Galleon (a gelley works also but since you have ironclads you must have astonomy). If you have combustion and oil, you can build a transport.

You can then attach the island city. The will be a 25% advantage to the defenders because you are attacking from a ship unless the unit has the amphibious promotion.

Darn, I had three, but I didn't know they were transports. I didn't think I needed them anymore so I disbanded them when I got steam power.

Do I just put troops in them then try to disembark the troops into the city? If so, will the troops automaticzlly engage the enemy when they disemabrk.

You highlight the unit and move them into the enemy city, just as if you were attacking a land based city.

Can't imagine why I said galleons are the first troop transport.

Just select the unit and move it onto the city and it will attack. You can right click the unit and drag onto the city to see your combat odds. You will get a 50% penalty for amphibious assault, so you may need more units than you expect.

1) Load units into Galleon. If you have Marines, use those, since units attacking from sea get a 25% loss in strength unless they have the Amphibious promotion (which Marines come with).
2) Launch Galleon. Select all Galleons and right-click on city
3) Watch as your troops a) capture city or b) are decimated
4) Either result lets your Galleons survive. If your attack fails, send your Galleons back for more troops, and repeat.
