How do Supremancy's "20% bonus when flanking" bonuses work?

If there are two units next to each other will they get the bonus?

If there are 3 units in row the edge ones will get the bonus, but what if there would be a unit behind them? Would they retain the bonus?

What about 3 units in a "clump"? Will there be bonus?

Flanking means "more than one unit adjacent to the target unit".

If you have a unit next to an enemy unit, there are five remaining spots around the enemy that could be classed as "flanking".

I'm not sure how this works for ranged units, if it works for ranged units, if it even gets applied to any ranged unit as a promotion.
