How do we get shields from minks and cows?

I've always wondered why furs and cattle produce shields. It seems to me that wonders, improvements, and units are made almost entirely from wood, stone, and metal. I don't see how fur and leather come in handy. Does anyone have a rationalization?

Leather toolbelts, slings, satchels, buckets, tool handles maybe? All things that increase efficiency even if not actually a raw material of the item under construction.

That's a much better idea than I'd been able to come up with. However,
1) It still doesn't answer the question about furs;
2) Would it not also make sense for game to produce shields as well?

In the ancient ages I certainly would agree, but not beyond the Iron Age timeframe, I would think..

Furs keep you warm in the colder climates, so you can work while not freezing.

Leather and bone are the plastics of history. Clothing, tools, shelter (depending on culture), armor, weapons, storage containers, etc.

And, domesticatable animals such as cattle were very important for large porjects, pushing, pulling, etc. No, city improvemements are not made of cows and beavers, but the presence of such resources indirectly facilitate them. It's a stretch of the imagination, but not unreasonable.
