Without fail, as soon as you take an enemy city, there are neighboring cities (sometimes other enemy cities, sometimes that enemy's neighbor) that immediately begin to spank you with culture.

How do you handle it?

I'm not sure the best method to handle it. I've often times waged wars that are too long because I'm always going after that "next neighboring city" to deal with the culture problem. I sometimes plan my wars, gauging to go one city deeper than I want, cause I know the last city will fail. Leaving a capital nearby is always a risk, too, as capitals usually have the palace and an early wonder or four.

Your feedback is appreciated. I find myself stuffing captured cities with Great Artists, specialists, and culture producing buildings. I will also prolong the war to take that next city that's causing culture trouble. Both of those are costly, wasting time producing culture bulldings, and also maintaining a long war.

I build theaters xD

Nah if the culture is of the civilization that the city was of, I dont care then because it cant be flipped. But if it is of other Civs, I normally start off building a lot of cultural stuff first..

Pick a large and well developed city and raze the surrounding cities if they are not holy cities and don't have wonders.
Problem solved.

Whip theaters and used artists, and capture/raze the surrounding cities. It's a vicious cycle, though - capture a city, then keep going to capture the cities pressuring it, and then the cities pressuring those cities, and so on....Before you know it, the continents yours!

Unless it's a holy city, has a wonder in it, or will give me quick access to a new resource, I'll raise the city if it's going to be swallowed up by another civ's culture soon.

I didn't realize that...

So, if you're knee deep in Napoleon (or whomever), if you've captured the city, Napoleon's bordering culture is only there to choke you out, and he can't flip the city back? Are you sure about that?

100% sure :)

There is even a option in Custom Game to let it happen, something like "Captured cities will flip" or so.
But revolts can happen still. More than twice because it wont flip anyway hehe..

I don't think conquered cities can culturally flip back to their previous owners anymore. However the population will riot and you can be left holding a city that has no cultural influence over any square other than the one it is built on. The city usually ends up starving down to a very low population.

Once in a while I may keep a city - otherwise they all are burned.. I just look for cities with really high culture erc..

I don't usually count on the cities I capture it be good for anything anyway, so I don't worry too much about it being choked. It seems like if I keep enough military units in it, having it flip isn't much of a problem either. And I usually will have a lot of units in the captured city as it very often serves as the staging area for conquering that next city that is giving it so much pressure. :D

Yeah, that part is what had me troubled in thinking it might flip. Stupid Spanish citizens! Should have whipped them all until they were 100% Carthaginian!

I often do that. But didnt realize also that a captured city wont flip back. Thats kind of smart, knowing that culture is hard to produce. But i still like the burn them all way !

I chose: What cities? When I go to war, I knock the whole civ out entirely.. I think that way for the very reason of culture encroaching on any city I acquire. The problem is, when I take one civ, their neigbours culture begins to encrouch on my new border cities... so I go to war with them aswell, etc, etc, etc. I hate the idea of culture swamping territory when you conquer a city.

It depends on my aim.

If I plan to only take part of the civs territory, I send my stacks beyond the cities I want and first attack the cities whose culture will encroach on my future borders*. I raze these cities, then return to the cities I want. This has the added advantage of hindering my enemies war machine - usually the razed cities are core cities.

If I plan to take all of my opponents mainland, I first do a tour of his cities that border with all other civs and raze them. Then conquer and keep the cities in the center which won't be adversely affected by the culture of other civs.

* I play with the option for conquered cities to flip back to their previous owners switched on.

All my wars set out to grab land ,so the first is to build culture building on the borders to soften the defenders and gain vital land.I am a fan of no city razing.

Change to slavery ===> Capture City ===> Whip for every cultural building possible while importing your religion. If that doesn't work the first time, burn it.

Capture the cities that exert the greatest pressure. If that doesn't fail to stop the encroachment and riots then i guess i just have to suck it up or pump the city with culture

I thought this thread was about other civs' culture on your conquered city. Either way, I will raze a city on the border of a third civ because it is likely to flip to that guy anyway.
Since we usually play with "City Flipping on Conquest" off, I wouldn't worry if the city you're holding revolts for its previous owner, it should never go back without war!
But then again, if I'm on the winning side, I usually never accept peace unless it comes with techs.
