Isn't there supposed to be box to click to get rid of spies? I can't find it anywhere. And if you can't get rid of it, how do you counter it? I've tried sticking a spy in every town, but all you can do with them is put them to sleep, and they do nothing. I hate poison water supplies and other illogical actions. It really mess up the game for me. Thanks for any help.

I think there should be a "no espionage" box you can tick. So all espionage points and spies won't be in the game.
Regarding countering espionage, spies in your borders/cities helps (Sometimes you get the message "a spy has been caught by counter intelligence agents" which I think has something to do with that, and/or maybe the security bureau). Plus performing the mission "counter-espionage" will increase the cost of others performing missions in your empire. Also, the more you use it the cheaper missions become to you, and conversely more expensive for your opponents. apparently.
I quite like spies in the game, but its something you have to make sure you keep up with - neglecting espionage is like neglecting to create a sufficient military.

Instead of trying to block the other nation's spies, just use spies yourself on them.

It's in the custom game options, scroll down the checkboxes to enable "no espionage"

its on the 3.19 patch. just search for it and download :)

if it's not in the 3.19 path (i'm pretty sure it is), try installing the BUG mod (i installed both at the same time so I don't know which gave me the no espionage option.

If you don't already have it, get the BUG mod
http://civ4bug.sourceforge.net/BUGMod.html

It is great, and easy to disable if you don't like it.

The Espionage checkbox under Custom Game is off screen. You have to scroll down to find it. Also, be aware that if you disable espionage, culture gets screwy. All espionage points are converted to culture and the amount to achieve culture victory triples or something like that. I tried it once, since I don't like the espionage, but it screwed culture, which I use a lot, so badly that I never did it again. Now I just put a spy to sleep in every city and on valuable resources. Sleeping spies function to catch foreign spies. Nearly every turn I get at least one notice that a spy has been caught in one of my cities but they don't accomplish anything before getting caught.
