How does food waste get calculated?

Hey there, haven't played in a few years and just came back. What determines food waste? Is there any way to mitigate it? Is there any way to avoid it all together? Right now it just seems like a band-aid fix for having way too many sources of food.

It's not exactly a bandaid fix anymore - it probably was. Now it's more of an attempt to simulate. We have other ways to fix that issue in balance that we could always use more liberally than we are now. We do have some intended new tags for buildings to interact with it eventually. There's a thread around here somewhere that detailed the new way it gets calculated and why... there was a change to that at the end of last design cycle.
